How do you get a child car seat for an airport transfer to Muskoka?

Choose the seat in the booker when you reserve: child seats, toddler seats and booster seats are options on the booking. Tell us the child's age and, if you know it, weight and height, so the seat matches. The desk confirms the vehicle and the seat before the trip, and the seat is in the car when the chauffeur arrives.

Travelling to Muskoka with children is a logistics problem dressed up as a holiday. There is a flight, a long drive, a pile of gear, a cottage that may be at the end of a gravel road, and a child whose patience runs out at about the same point as the highway turns into Highway 11. A car seat is the least negotiable item in that picture.

MuskokaLimousineServices.com treats family travel as a first-class use of the service. This page covers the seat options, what Ontario says about them, how to pick a vehicle, what to do about strollers and snacks, and when the bus or train is a better idea than a car.

What does Ontario require for children in cars?

Ontario.ca sets the stages out on its choosing a child car seat page. In plain terms:

  • Rear-facing child car seat: for babies up to 9 kg (20 lb). A child can stay rear-facing until they outgrow the seat's weight and height limits.
  • Forward-facing child car seat: for toddlers from 9 to 18 kg (20 to 40 lb). A rear-facing seat may be used instead if the manufacturer recommends it.
  • Booster seat: for children from 18 to 36 kg (40 to 80 lb) who are under 145 cm (4 ft 9 in) and under eight.
  • Seat belt alone: once the child turns eight, reaches 36 kg (80 lb) or reaches 145 cm (4 ft 9 in).

The same page says drivers must make sure children under 16 wear a seat belt and children under eight are in the correct seat. Conviction under the Highway Traffic Act for failing to secure a child carries a $240 fine and two demerit points. Ontario's seat belt page adds that children under 12 are safest in the back seat, away from active front airbags, and that a child may sit in the front only if there is no active front airbag or it can be switched off.

What about taxis, buses and limousines?

The car seat page lists exemptions: taxicabs transporting paying passengers (except when carrying children for personal reasons or under contract with a school board), buses and public vehicles carrying paying passengers, ambulances, and vehicles with only lap belts (for the booster requirement only). It does not mention limousines or give them a separate rule, so we do not claim an exemption and do not recommend relying on one.

The practical point for visitors: do not assume any car you flag down, or any shuttle, will have a child seat. A pre-booked transfer is the place where you can ask for one and be sure it is there.

Transport Canada also publishes guidance on child car seat safety, including pages on installing a seat and on how long seats stay safe to use. If you plan to bring your own seat, read those before you pack it.

Booster, toddler and infant seats: how to choose

Choosing in the booker is a three-step habit.

  1. Age first. Put the child's age in the booking.
  2. Then weight and height. The seat has to match the child, not the birth certificate. A tall five-year-old and a small seven-year-old may need different seats.
  3. Then the note. If the child has a preference, if there is a medical need, or if you want to bring a seat you know and trust, say so in a note with the booking.

Many families prefer to carry their own seat because they know how it fits and how the harness adjusts. If that is you, tell the desk when you book so the plan accounts for it. If you would rather not carry a seat through the airport, ask for one in the booker.

Two cautions. First, a thick winter snowsuit changes how a harness fits; take the coat off, buckle the child in, and put the coat over the top or the blanket on afterwards. Second, check the seat before the trip rather than at the kerb, when the chauffeur and the clock are both waiting.

Which vehicle fits a family with seats?

Seats take space. A rear-facing infant seat is bulky, a forward-facing seat is wider, and three children across the back of any vehicle is tight. Choose the class by counting people, seats and bags.

ClassPassengersBagsFamily fit
Executive Sedanup to 32 largeA couple and one seated child with minimal luggage
Mercedes E / S-Classup to 22Not usually a family choice; two passengers only
Business SUVup to 66Two adults, one or two seated children, luggage
Executive First Class SUVup to 66The same, with more comfort for a long drive
Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter)up to 1212Two families, grandparents, or a multi-generation trip
Jet Sprinter Executiveup to 75 largeFewer bags, more space

All vehicles are "or similar", and the model is confirmed at booking. A useful rule: if you are travelling with two children in seats and a stroller, choose an SUV even if the head count says a sedan would do. Stretch limousines carry minimal luggage, and the Stretch SUV Limousine and the party bus carry only 4 and 2 large bags, so they are poor choices for a family arriving from a flight.

For bigger groups, see Sprinter and group transportation, and for the full range, the fleet page.

The trip: distance, time and a plan for the middle

Pearson to Gravenhurst is about 165 km and usually 1 h 50 off-peak. Pearson to Bracebridge adds about 15 km, and Huntsville about 34 km more again, roughly 215 km and 2 h 30 in total. On a summer Friday afternoon or the Friday of a long weekend, allow 3 h 30 or more to Gravenhurst. Our Highway 400 and 11 traffic guide describes when the road is worst.

Children change the schedule. Some practical tips:

  • Time the departure around the nap. A child who falls asleep at Barrie and wakes at Gravenhurst is the best result.
  • Pack a snack bag within reach. Do not put it in the luggage compartment. Tell the chauffeur you want it accessible.
  • Plan one stop. Ask for an extra stop on the booking if you know the child needs a break; you can add it in the booker.
  • Keep the entertainment charged and downloaded before you leave the airport, so it does not depend on a signal.

Your flight is tracked, so a late landing is absorbed. Free waiting is 60 minutes after international landings and 30 after domestic ones, which matters with a family that takes a long time to get off the plane, through the arrivals hall and to the bags.

Meet and greet for families

Meet and greet inside arrivals is a booker option. The chauffeur waits inside with a name board, which means you are not searching a crowd with a tired child. For a family with a stroller and a car seat, it is probably the most useful option on the booking. The Toronto Pearson page describes how the pickup works, and the Billy Bishop page covers the island airport.

Pets and service animals

Pets travel in a carrier. Trained service animals travel free. If a dog is part of the family trip to the cottage, tell the desk when you book, and bring the carrier. Cottage country is full of dogs, and the chauffeurs know it, but the carrier rule is firm.

Is the bus or train a better choice with kids?

Sometimes. The honest comparison for Toronto to Gravenhurst:

ModeDoor-to-door timeCost noteLuggageBest for
Private car with seatsAbout 2 h from Toronto off-peak; Pearson to Gravenhurst about 1 h 50Fixed fare via booker2 large bags per sedan, 6 per SUV, 12 per SprinterYoung children, seats, strollers, late arrivals

Own carAbout 2 h from Toronto off-peakFuel and parkingWhatever fitsFamilies who own seats and want to drive

The Northlander fares come from Ontario Northland's launch fares page, which lists child fares and says discounts will be offered to children; it does not define the age range. The service was still described as returning later in 2026 on the pages we read, with timings labelled proposed, so check before you plan around it. Our Northlander guide covers the detail.

The train has a real advantage for older children: they can walk around, and nobody is driving. The private car wins for babies and toddlers in seats, for the last mile to a cottage, and for any arrival that does not fit the timetable.

Where families go

Typical family destinations, each with its own page:

Use the hourly mode for a day of activities, so the car and the seat stay with you. The hourly chauffeur page explains it.

Cottage arrival with kids

Cottage roads in Muskoka are often long, narrow and unlit, and addresses are marked by fire numbers on posts rather than street signs. Put the fire number in a note with the booking, and the gate or driveway instruction. Arrive in daylight when you can, because a child carried from the car to an unfamiliar cottage in the dark is a harder arrival than one in the late afternoon.

Cancellation

Counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice no charge; 72 hours or less 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show 100%. Peak dates, such as long weekends, may carry a different deadline, printed on the confirmation. Families often book the long weekends, so read it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide child car seats?

Child seats, toddler seats and booster seats are booker options. Select the seat when you book and give the child's age, weight and height if you know them. The desk confirms the vehicle, and the chauffeur has the seat fitted for your trip.

What are Ontario's car seat rules?

Per Ontario.ca: rear-facing seats for babies up to 9 kg (20 lb), forward-facing for 9 to 18 kg, boosters for 18 to 36 kg under 145 cm and under eight, then seat belt alone. Failing to secure a child can mean a $240 fine and two demerit points.

Can I bring my own car seat?

Many families do, because they know how it fits. Tell the desk when you book and put it in a note with the booking, so the plan allows for it.

Are taxis exempt from car seat rules in Ontario?

Ontario.ca lists taxicabs carrying paying passengers as exempt, except when carrying children for personal reasons or under a school-board contract. That does not mean a cab will have a seat. With a pre-booked car you request one.

How much space do car seats take?

Enough that you should size up. Count the seats and the bags, and use an SUV or a Sprinter for two children in seats plus luggage. Stretch limousines and party buses carry little luggage.

Can the chauffeur meet us inside arrivals?

Yes. Meet and greet inside arrivals is a booker option, with the chauffeur waiting with a name board. Free waiting is 60 minutes after international landings and 30 after domestic ones.

Can we bring the dog?

Pets travel in a carrier. Trained service animals travel free. Tell the desk about the pet when you book.

Is there a family-friendly way to stop on the way?

Yes. Add an extra stop in the booker, or put the request in a note with the booking. Plan the stop for where a child needs it, such as before the last stretch of Highway 11.
