16 Muskoka towns · 20 airports

Cottage, resort and airport cars from Gravenhurst to Dorset and Parry Sound, to Pearson, Billy Bishop, Muskoka Airport and every major airport in Ontario; fly-in arrivals from the rest of Canada met through the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network.

MuskokaLimousineServices.com runs pre-booked chauffeured cars between Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) and every Muskoka town, from Huntsville and Dorset in the north to Gravenhurst and Bala in the south. If you are searching for an Ottawa airport to Muskoka limo, this page tells you the real distances, the two roads that make sense, what the airport pickup looks like, and when something other than a private car is the better answer.

The honest headline: Ottawa is not next door. Huntsville is about 345 km from the terminal, Bracebridge about 370 km and Gravenhurst about 375 km, and a route planner puts every one of them above five hours. That is a long, quiet day, and the right vehicle and the right start time matter more here than on any Toronto run.

How do you get from Ottawa airport to Muskoka by private car?

Pre-book a chauffeured car to meet you at YOW arrivals. The usual road is Highway 417 and Highway 17 west to Renfrew, then Highway 60 through Algonquin Park to Huntsville, about 345 km. For Bracebridge or Gravenhurst the Highlands road via Bancroft and Haliburton is about 370 to 375 km. Expect five and a half hours off-peak.

There is no motorway link between Ottawa and Muskoka. Highway 400 and Highway 11 point south to north, and Ottawa sits more than 300 km to the east. So the trip is a cross-country drive on two-lane provincial highways, with a 417 and 416 run at the Ottawa end.

Book it as one trip, one fixed fare, one chauffeur. The booker asks for the flight number, so we watch the arrival rather than the schedule, and the car is waiting whether you land early or late.

Distance and time from YOW to each Muskoka town

All figures are road distances from a route planner, rounded, with typical off-peak time. Add weather, a slow truck on Highway 60 or a fall-colour weekend and the clock moves.

From YOW toRoad distanceTypical time off-peakMain road

Every figure is the planner's estimate for a clear day. A summer Friday afternoon at the Muskoka end, or a first snowfall on Highway 60, adds time no table can promise, so book a pickup that lets you arrive in daylight in November and with a buffer in July.

Where the chauffeur meets you at Ottawa airport

Ottawa Airport's own ground transportation page lists limousines and pre-arranged vehicles at pillars 12 and 13, along the curb furthest from the terminal. Rideshare uses the same stretch of kerb, and hotel shuttles sit just beyond at pillars 13 to 15. You can read the current layout on the Ottawa Airport ground transportation page.

You do not have to find pillar 12 on your own. Add the Meet and Greet service in the booker and your chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board, or an alias if you prefer your name stays off the sign. Without it, you receive the car details and walk out to the curb.

  • Flight tracking is on every airport pickup, so a late aircraft moves the chauffeur, not the other way round.
  • Free waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, counted from landing.
  • Luggage goes in the vehicle class you pick, and the class table is on our fleet page.
  • Privacy: ask the desk to keep your details private if you would rather the chauffeur sees only a pickup name.

A note on kerbs: the airport's page says passenger loading is not permitted on Level 3 and uses Level 1 for pickups unless otherwise indicated. Your confirmation carries the exact pickup instruction, and the chauffeur calls if the terminal changes its signs.

The Highway 60 route through Algonquin Park

For Huntsville, Dorset, Baysville and Lake of Bays, this is the road. From Ottawa you take Highway 417 west, join Highway 17 towards Renfrew, then turn onto Highway 60 and keep going through Eganville, Barry's Bay and Whitney into the park, out past Oxtongue Lake and Dwight, and onto Huntsville's Main Street.

Ontario Parks describes the corridor as a 56-kilometre stretch of Highway 60 inside Algonquin Provincial Park. The two points visitors ask about most:

  1. Do you need a permit just to drive through? No. The Friends of Algonquin day-use page says people travelling on Highway 60 between Oxtongue Lake and Whitney do not need a permit.
  2. What if you stop? If you use any facility, such as a trail, picnic ground or washroom, a permit is required. Ask the chauffeur before a scenic stop and we will arrange it as a planned pause rather than a surprise.

Wildlife is the real hazard on this stretch. Moose and deer cross at dusk, dawn and after dark, and a long dark drive in November is the one time we advise leaving earlier rather than later. If you want the park as a destination in its own right, our Algonquin tours from Muskoka page covers it, and the Toronto to Algonquin Park page covers the approach from the south.

The Highlands route to Bracebridge and Gravenhurst

If your destination is Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Port Carling or Bala, the planner does not send you through the park at all. It takes Highway 417 and Highway 17 to Renfrew, then Highway 132 and Highway 41, Highway 28 through Bancroft, and Highway 118 through Haliburton to Highway 11 at Bracebridge. That is about 370 km to Bracebridge and 375 km to Gravenhurst.

Why it wins for the southern towns: Highway 60 would put you in Huntsville, which is the wrong end of Muskoka, and you would still have an hour of Highway 11 to go. The Highlands road is quieter, passes through small towns where there is a coffee and a washroom, and keeps you out of park-gate traffic on fall-colour weekends.

There is a second, much longer way round through Toronto, about 515 km from the terminal to Gravenhurst by the planner, so it is not a serious option unless a closure forces it. Your chauffeur checks Ontario 511, which shows winter road conditions, construction, closures and snowplow positions, before the trip begins and again at the lunch stop.

Ottawa to Muskoka without a private car

Public transport exists but it is a full-day project. Here is the comparison we would draw for a traveller landing at YOW.

Ontario Northland operates a coach between Ottawa, North Bay and Sudbury (routes 501 and 502 on its timetables), and a separate line from Toronto through Barrie, Bracebridge and Huntsville to North Bay. There is no direct Ottawa to Huntsville coach, so the trip means changing at North Bay. The Northlander train is not running as of this writing; Ontario Northland says it is working toward reinstatement, and our Northlander guide tracks the plan.

When the bus or a flight is the better choice

The bus is the better choice when you are travelling alone, have a single backpack, nothing to be at, and a day to spare. A fixed-fare car will not undercut a public ticket on a per-person basis for one traveller, and we would not pretend it will.

Flying through Toronto is the better choice when your ticket already routes you there and your Muskoka stop is Gravenhurst or Bracebridge. Our Toronto Pearson page and the Muskoka Airport page cover the airports on that leg, and the flying to Muskoka guide explains the options.

When a private car wins on this route

The case for a car is strongest exactly where the public options are weakest.

  • Three or more travellers. A Business SUV carries up to six with six bags, and an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 with 12 bags.
  • Cottage luggage, groceries and coolers. A coach cannot take a week of cottage supplies from an Ottawa grocery store; a car can.
  • Children and car seats. Child seat, toddler seat and booster seat options are in the booker, and our family travel page lists what to request.
  • A late flight. The last connecting bus has gone long before a 22:00 arrival.
  • Resort arrival times. If your Muskoka resort check-in closes at a set hour, a fixed pickup time is easier to plan around than a coach connection.
  • Privacy. There is no stranger sharing the next seat and no stop on a timetable you do not control.

Getting the vehicle class right

Pick by passenger and bag count. An Executive Sedan takes up to 3 with 2 large bags, a Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV takes up to 6 with 6 bags, an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 with 12 bags, and a Jet Sprinter Executive takes up to 7 with 5 bags. Models are "or similar", confirmed at booking. Stretch limousines, party buses and the Mercedes-Maybach carry little luggage, so they suit a local evening rather than a six-hour airport run; Rolls-Royce is on request through the reservations desk, with availability confirmed in writing. The full fleet page lists every class.

Winter and shoulder-season trips

Between late November and March, Highway 60 and the Highlands road both see snow, and daylight is short. Leaving Ottawa after a mid-afternoon flight means finishing in darkness on a road with wildlife and few services.

What we recommend: check Ontario 511 before you fly, and treat a delayed evening arrival as a reason to stop for the night in Ottawa rather than push on. For the ski and snowmobile side of Muskoka, our winter transfers page goes further.

Heading back: Muskoka to Ottawa airport

The return leg follows the same roads in reverse. The rule of thumb is simple: add the planner time to the check-in time you need, then add a buffer for the road. For a flight leaving mid-morning from YOW, that usually means a pickup in Muskoka in the dark.

Book the pickup for the earlier of the two times you work out, tell the desk about extra stops such as a Barry's Bay coffee, and treat the airline's check-in window as your real deadline.

Corporate travellers can set up a corporate account with monthly invoicing, and the travel desk handles itineraries that stitch Ottawa, Toronto and Muskoka together. For a bigger picture of the network, the airport transfers hub lists every airport we serve, and the Muskoka hub lists the towns.

How the fare works

You see one total before you pay. It is fixed, it covers the whole transfer, and it is calculated for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle class. HST is included, and nothing is added at the end of the trip. The reasoning behind the figure is set out in our explainer on private car fares.

If plans change, the clock runs back from the scheduled pickup. Cancel with more than 72 hours' notice and nothing is charged. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less it is 50%, and inside 24 hours, or if nobody shows, it is 100%. Long weekends and large weddings can carry a different deadline, which is printed on your confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct bus from Ottawa airport to Muskoka?

No. Ontario Northland runs a coach from Ottawa to North Bay and a separate line from Toronto through Barrie, Bracebridge and Huntsville to North Bay, so you change at North Bay. It is a full-day trip. The airport also has a local OC Transpo bus, but it only reaches the city.

How far is Ottawa airport from Huntsville?

About 345 km by Highway 417, Highway 17 and Highway 60 through Algonquin Park. A route planner estimates about 5 h 20 off-peak. It is the shortest of the Muskoka towns from YOW. Dorset is similar, and Bracebridge and Gravenhurst add 25 to 30 km because the quicker road runs through the Highlands.

Do I need an Algonquin permit to drive through the park?

Not to drive through. Friends of Algonquin says people on Highway 60 between Oxtongue Lake and Whitney do not need a permit. If you stop and use a facility such as a trail, picnic ground or washroom, a permit is required. Ask us before the trip if you want a planned stop.

Where will my chauffeur meet me at Ottawa airport?

Ottawa Airport lists limousines and pre-arranged vehicles at pillars 12 and 13. If you add the Meet and Greet service at booking, the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board instead. Your confirmation carries the exact instruction for your flight and terminal door.

How long will the chauffeur wait if my flight is late?

Flight tracking is on every airport pickup, so the chauffeur follows the actual landing time. Free waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic landing, counted from landing. Pickups that are not airport arrivals include 15 minutes.

Can the car carry cottage luggage and groceries from Ottawa?

Yes, within the vehicle class. A Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV carries up to six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Stretch limousines and party buses carry little luggage. Tell us at booking about coolers or oversize items.

Can I book child seats for the Ottawa to Muskoka drive?

Yes. Child seat, toddler seat and booster seat options are in the booker, and you choose them when you book. A five-hour drive is long for small children, so most families add a planned washroom and snack stop, which we add as an extra stop to the same booking.

Can I book a return trip from Muskoka to Ottawa airport on the same booking?

Yes. Return trips and extra stops can be added to one booking, and corporate accounts can be invoiced monthly. Book the return pickup earlier than you think you need, because the road is long and the airport check-in deadline does not move.

How much does it cost?

Enter your flight and your Muskoka address in the booker and it returns a total for that exact trip, the 13% HST included, before any payment. Nothing is metered, and the figure you accept is the figure charged.
