16 Muskoka towns · 20 airports

Cottage, resort and airport cars from Gravenhurst to Dorset and Parry Sound, to Pearson, Billy Bishop, Muskoka Airport and every major airport in Ontario; fly-in arrivals from the rest of Canada met through the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network.

The best way to see Muskoka's autumn colour is slowly, from a seat where you are not watching the road. A MuskokaLimousineServices.com fall colours tour puts a chauffeur at the wheel of a private car for the loop you choose: the Lake of Bays circuit with the Dorset Lookout Tower, the Huntsville lookouts, or a day on the Highway 60 corridor through Algonquin Park. This page sets out the routes with real distances, the 2026 reservation and permit rules that catch people out, and how to time a Muskoka fall colours tour so you see colour rather than a car park.

When is the best week for a Muskoka fall colours tour?

Colours usually run from mid-September to mid-October. Discover Muskoka's historical estimates put early colour at about 20 September to 3 October, peak maple colour around 4 to 8 October, and a later golden stretch to about 18 October. Each year differs, so check the park reports the week you travel.

Ontario Parks publishes a fall colour report in which each park shows its own report date, dominant colour, colour change and leaf fall. The reports are updated park by park, not on a fixed regional schedule. At the time of writing (10 October 2026), the Algonquin entry was dated 9 October and listed yellow and orange as the dominant colours. Ontario Parks also notes that colours at Killbear on Georgian Bay usually peak around Thanksgiving weekend, and Awenda's waterfront does best in September.

Discover Muskoka's regional colour report shows the pattern you would expect: Algonquin and Huntsville ahead, Lake of Bays in the middle, and Georgian Bay last. If you have one day and a choice of dates, aim for the week the Algonquin report shows strong colour and the Georgian Bay report is still building, then pick a weekday.

Three loops, with real distances

All figures are road distances and driving time from a route planner, without stops. Add 20 to 30 minutes per stop, and more at the tower.

Loop 1: the Lake of Bays circuit (about 126 km, 2 h of driving)

Start in Bracebridge, take Muskoka Road 117 east to Baysville (23 km), continue to Dorset (27 km), turn north on Highway 35 to Dwight (19 km), then follow Highway 60 west to Huntsville (21 km) and Highway 11 south back to Bracebridge (37 km). The Township of Lake of Bays describes an 80 km scenic drive around the lake itself, linking Baysville, Dwight and Dorset, with bakeries, a craft brewery and seasonal studio tours on the way. Our circuit extends it to a full loop from the Highway 11 towns.

Stops that work well:

  • Baysville: the bridge, the dam and Grist Mill Park, a short riverside stop.
  • Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower: see below. It is the highest point on the loop.
  • Dwight: a bakery stop and the junction to Highway 60.
  • Huntsville: a lunch break before the run south.

Loop 2: Huntsville lookouts and Arrowhead (about 40 km of driving)

Huntsville has the most colour for the least driving. Lions Lookout is a short climb with views over Fairy Lake; Discover Muskoka puts the trail at about 1.5 km. Arrowhead Provincial Park is 12 km from the town. For a bigger view, drive to the Muskoka Lakes and walk Huckleberry Rock Lookout, a 2.5 km loop over Lake Muskoka that Discover Muskoka recommends at peak colour.

Loop 3: Algonquin Park on Highway 60

From Dwight, Oxtongue Lake and the park's West Gate are about 10 km away. From Huntsville it is about 30 km. The park's Highway 60 corridor has trails, lookouts and roadside views along a road with an 80 km/h speed limit. See the Algonquin Park tours page for a full day.

The Dorset Lookout Tower: book it before you book us

The tower is run by the Township of Algonquin Highlands. As of 2026:

  • Fall reservations are required between 19 September and 25 October, at ahtrails.ca. Bookings opened at 9 a.m. on 1 September. Outside that window, no booking is required.
  • The 2026 season ends on 25 October.
  • Hours in the fall are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and Thanksgiving Monday, until 13 October. From 14 to 25 October the tower is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last entry is one hour before closing.
  • During the fall colour season the township charges $16.74 per car, plus taxes, with walk-ups at $5.58 per person.
  • The present tower is 30 metres tall, and its observation deck is 142 metres above Lake of Bays. Leashed dogs are welcome in the park but cannot climb the tower.

We cannot book the tower for you. The reservation is in your name on the township's system. Book your time first, then tell us the slot in the booker note, and we will plan the whole day backwards from it, with a margin for the road.

Algonquin Park: permits, crowds and what to carry

If your tour takes you into the park, three rules apply:

  1. A day-use permit is needed for any stop at a trail, picnic ground or washroom. As of 2026 the Highway 60 corridor permit is $21.00 per vehicle per day, valid 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Driving straight through between Oxtongue Lake and Whitney does not need one.
  2. Permits are bought online or by phone only, up to five days in advance, and are not sold at the gate once a day sells out. A permit is tied to a licence plate; Ontario Parks lets you update the plate later in your account if the vehicle is not yet known. Because a chauffeured vehicle may be classed differently from a private car, confirm the permit category with Ontario Parks before you buy.
  3. Booth's Rock Trail needs its own version of the permit from 12 September to 18 October 2026.

Ontario Parks' own advice is useful, and we follow it: visit Monday to Thursday if you can; on weekends arrive before 10 a.m.; consider the East Gate if you are driving from the Greater Toronto Area; fill your fuel tank first, because the last stations on the west side are in Huntsville or Dwight; and do not stop on the highway shoulder. The Thanksgiving long weekend is described as especially busy, and in 2026 the Hardwood Lookout Trail was closed from 9 to 12 October.

When a chauffeur is the right choice for colour, and when it is not

If you have a free week, your own car and no schedule, drive the loops yourself and stop where you like. Colour hunting rewards flexibility. If you want a rain-day plan or a no-hurry afternoon, you may enjoy it more behind your own wheel.

A booked car is the better way when:

  • Two or more people want to look rather than drive. The best views often come at the wrong moment for a driver.
  • You are visiting for a day or a weekend and want the tower slot, the lunch and the lookout in a single plan.
  • A group travels together, up to 12 in an Executive Sprinter or 7 in a Jet Sprinter Executive.
  • Anyone has limited stamina, because the car can stop at the trailhead and wait.
  • You are timing a flight, a wedding or a dinner around the tour.

How to build your day

A typical half-day is the Lake of Bays circuit with Baysville and Dorset: about 3 to 4 hours, one of them at the tower. A full day adds Huntsville's lookouts and lunch, or Dwight and a drive to Oxtongue Lake. Hire the car in the booker's hourly mode, enter your pickup, list the stops, and the booker shows a fixed all-in fare. The hourly chauffeur guide explains how the mode works, and a dedicated planning page for holiday weekends is the Thanksgiving and long weekends guide.

From Toronto, Dorset is about 231 km each way, around 3 h 15 off-peak, so a same-day return from the city is possible but long. Most guests arrive the evening before or stay over. From Muskoka Airport, Dorset is about 58 km; see the Muskoka Airport page. For airport arrivals see the Toronto Pearson page.

Vehicles for a colour tour

  • Mercedes E / S-Class (up to 2 passengers, 2 large bags) for a couple.
  • Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV (up to 6 passengers, 6 bags) for a family, with space for a picnic.
  • Jet Sprinter Executive (up to 7 passengers, 5 bags) or Executive Sprinter (up to 12 passengers, 12 bags) for a larger party.

Models are "or similar" and confirmed at booking; the Mercedes-Maybach is in the booker, while Rolls-Royce is on request through the reservations desk, with availability confirmed in writing. Child seats, a pet in a carrier (tell the desk when you book), a note with the booking and a trained service animal (free) are available. See the fleet page.

The booking details

The fare is fixed and all-in. HST is included, and nothing is added at the end of the trip. Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice carries no charge; 72 hours or less 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%. Peak dates such as Thanksgiving may carry a different deadline, printed on the confirmation, so book early in October.

Frequently asked questions

When is peak fall colour in Muskoka?

Colours generally run from mid-September to mid-October. Discover Muskoka's historical estimates put peak maple colour around 4 to 8 October and a later stretch to about 18 October. Conditions vary yearly, so check the Ontario Parks report in the week before you travel.

Do I need a reservation for the Dorset Lookout Tower?

In 2026, yes, between 19 September and 25 October. Reservations are made at ahtrails.ca and opened on 1 September. Outside those dates no reservation is needed. Book your slot first, then give us the time so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need a permit to drive through Algonquin Park?

Not to drive straight through on Highway 60 between Oxtongue Lake and Whitney. A day-use permit is needed to use trails, picnic areas or washrooms. As of 2026 it costs $21.00 per vehicle per day, bought online or by phone and not at the gate.

How long is the Lake of Bays loop?

About 126 km and 2 hours of driving from Bracebridge via Baysville, Dorset, Dwight and Huntsville. With stops at the tower, a lookout and lunch, plan five to eight hours. The Township of Lake of Bays also describes an 80 km scenic loop of the lake itself.

Can you take us from Toronto for a day of colour?

Yes, but the round trip to Dorset is about 460 km and more than six hours of driving, so most guests stay over. We can collect you at Pearson, in town, or at Muskoka Airport, and run the loop the next morning by the hour.

What is the best vehicle for a group of eight?

An Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, so it suits a group of eight with picnic gear. Larger parties can use a coach on request, from 20 to 56 seats. Confirm the number of people at booking so the right vehicle is allocated.

Is a chauffeured colour tour better than a bus tour?

It is private and flexible: you choose the stops, the pace and the pickup point, and you can change the plan if clouds roll in. A large group tour has fixed times and a set route. If you prefer a fixed programme, a group tour may be the better choice.

What happens if it rains?

Rain often makes colour stand out, and Ontario Parks suggests overcast days for that reason. The tower and lookouts are less pleasant in strong wind or storms, so the tower itself advises against climbing in inclement weather. Tell the chauffeur your backup stops at booking.
