Lake Simcoe Regional Airport (ICAO code CYLS) is a county-owned airfield in Oro-Medonte, between Barrie and Orillia, and it is one of the quickest ways to reach Muskoka in a private aircraft: about 59 km and an hour by road to Gravenhurst. MuskokaLimousineServices.com books the ground half of that trip, with a licensed chauffeur at the FBO and a fixed fare shown before you pay. This page covers what the airport is, the hours it publishes, the drive times to every Muskoka town, and how we handle a quiet arrival.

How far is Lake Simcoe Regional Airport from Muskoka?

About 59 km from Gravenhurst, 75 km from Bracebridge and 109 km from Huntsville, so roughly one hour to Gravenhurst and up to 1 h 35 to Huntsville off-peak. It is about 113 km from Pearson. A pre-booked car meets you where the FBO directs and drives you on one fixed fare.

The airport's own site, lakesimcoeairport.com, gives its address as 30 Airport Road, Oro Medonte, Ontario L0L 2E0. It describes itself as an hour north of Toronto, and the airport's About page says the airport serves the County of Simcoe, including the cities of Barrie and Orillia, and that most of its roughly 533,000-person catchment is within a 40-minute drive.

What the airport is, from its own pages

Lake Simcoe Regional Airport is wholly owned by the County of Simcoe and operated by a municipal service corporation, Lake Simcoe Regional Airport Inc., overseen by a seven-member board. The About page traces the idea to the early 1970s, says the Oro-Medonte site was chosen in 1980, and says it opened in 1991 with a 3,500-foot runway. A second construction phase, finished in 1993, added a 5,000-foot runway and the terminal building. The current paved runway is described as 6,001 feet by 150 feet, with high-intensity LED airfield lighting.

Three further facts matter to a passenger:

  • Border services. The airport describes itself as an international port of entry with Commercial Port-of-Entry status, serviced by the Canada Border Services Agency. For an international flight, arrange your clearance with the airport and the border agency before you fly, rather than assuming a walk-in arrival.
  • FBO. It lists full-service FBO facilities, de-icing and anti-icing, and fuel.
  • Hours. The published hours are 07:00 to 21:00 local time from April 1 to October 31 and 07:00 to 19:00 from November 1 to March 31, seven days a week, and the site also lists 24-hour availability. Confirm after-hours arrangements with the airport.

The airport's pages talk about charter and private aviation. They do not list scheduled airline service, so most passengers here arrive on a private, corporate or charter flight. If you are flying a scheduled airline instead, see Toronto Pearson or Muskoka Airport (YQA).

These are rounded road distances from a route planner. Almost the whole run to Gravenhurst, Bracebridge or Huntsville is on Highway 11 itself, north through Orillia; Highway 400 only comes into it for Georgian Bay and Parry Sound. On a summer Friday afternoon, the Highway 11 stretch through Orillia is the place to add time.

The best ground option from CYLS: a car you booked

Lake Simcoe Regional Airport is a field for people with their own arrangements. Its pages do not list a scheduled coach, shuttle or taxi rank, so assume none and book ahead. If your party is flying in privately, the point of the aircraft is time, and nobody wants to give that back at a kerb waiting for a car.

A rental car is sensible if you are staying a week and want your own wheels. A car with a chauffeur is the better choice for a short stay, a party of several, a meeting that starts the moment you land, a hosted client or any arrival where you would rather read the briefing than the map. For where YQA fits, read our guide to flying to Muskoka.

How we handle a private-aircraft arrival

Flight tracking comes with every airport pickup. For a private aircraft, the useful data is the arrival estimate you or your handler give us, and we follow it as closely as the information allows. The chauffeur waits at the point the FBO directs, and you add the handling agent's details in the booking note.

  • Waiting time. The free window is 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups.
  • Names. The Meet and Greet service inside the terminal is a booker add-on, with a name board. You can use an alias instead of your real name, ask the desk to keep your details private and add a note with the booking.
  • Privacy. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and an NDA is available on request. Our chauffeurs are not security officers, though a VIP security guard can be added in the booker, and we also work alongside a client's own security team.
  • Compliance. Vehicles and chauffeurs are licensed and commercially insured.

For wider context on this kind of trip, see private jet FBO transfers and VIP and private client transportation.

Where people go from Oro-Medonte

Muskoka's lakes. The airport is the nearest private field to Gravenhurst, at 59 km, and a sensible gateway for Bracebridge and Huntsville. For resorts, Deerhurst Resort is on the Huntsville side.

The skiing and golf closer to the airport. Horseshoe Valley Resort's site, horseshoeresort.com, lists 28 alpine runs, a terrain park, snow tubing and Nordic trails, plus an 18-hole valley golf course. The resort is about 19 km from the airfield.

Georgian Bay. Blue Mountain is about 82 km away; read the Muskoka to Blue Mountain page for the winter and parking notes.

Barrie and Orillia. Each is a short drive for a hotel or a business meeting; see Barrie and Orillia.

Toronto. The drive to Pearson is about 113 km, usually 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 off-peak, which makes CYLS a workable alternative gateway to the north end of the GTA.

From landing to the dock: a sample day

A typical arrival looks like this. The aircraft lands in the early afternoon, the handler clears the passengers, and the chauffeur is at the FBO with the vehicle you chose. Bags go into the car, the route runs north on Highway 11, and in about an hour you are in Gravenhurst. A grocery stop in Orillia, if you want one, adds ten or fifteen minutes and goes on the same booking. By the time the aircraft has been towed to its hangar, you are unpacking at the cottage.

The airport's About page is worth reading if you are new to the field, because it explains the ownership, the history and the catchment. For anything about the airfield itself, such as fuel, hangarage, the exact meeting point or border clearance, the airport and your handler are the authority, and we work from what they confirm.

Two further points matter for planning. First, the published hours are shorter in winter than summer, so an evening arrival from November to March needs a conversation with the airport in advance. Second, a charter that is delayed by weather will often arrive in the dark, when the Highway 11 run feels longer than the same drive in July. Our reservations desk runs 24/7, so a late change is a message, not a missed pickup.

Planning notes for the road

  • Check 511 before you leave. Ontario's 511 service shows closures, cameras and roadwork.
  • Winter is a real consideration. Squalls off Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay can slow Highway 11 and Highway 400 quickly; allow extra time and tell us if the aircraft is delayed.
  • Ask your handler for the exact meeting point. FBO operations differ, and a clear meeting point saves minutes.
  • Tell us about bags early. An aircraft hold and a car boot do not have the same limits, so state the count in the booker.

For other airports, the airport transfers hub lists them all, and the Muskoka hub covers the towns.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lake Simcoe Regional Airport have scheduled flights?

The airport's own pages describe charter and private aviation, and they do not list scheduled airline service. Scheduled passengers use Pearson or Muskoka Airport. If you are unsure which applies, check with the airport before you book a ground transfer.

Is there customs at Lake Simcoe Regional Airport?

The airport describes itself as an international port of entry with Commercial Port-of-Entry status, serviced by the Canada Border Services Agency. Arrange clearance in advance with the airport and the border agency, and do not assume a walk-in arrival.

How far is Lake Simcoe Regional Airport from Gravenhurst?

About 59 km by road, usually 55 minutes to 1 h 05 off-peak. It is about 75 km from Bracebridge and 109 km from Huntsville. Allow extra time on a summer Friday afternoon or when Highway 11 is busy.

What are the airport's opening hours?

The airport lists 07:00 to 21:00 local time, April 1 to October 31, and 07:00 to 19:00, November 1 to March 31, seven days a week, along with 24-hour availability. Confirm after-hours arrivals with the airport directly.

Can you meet me inside the terminal or at the FBO?

Yes. The Meet and Greet service is a booker add-on, with the chauffeur waiting with a name board, and an alias is available on request. Give us the handling agent's name and the meeting point in a note with the booking so the car is waiting where the FBO directs.

How far is the airport from Toronto Pearson?

About 113 km, usually 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 off-peak. That makes the airfield a workable gateway if your arrival is in the north GTA and your destination is Muskoka, Barrie or Georgian Bay.

Can you take a large group from Oro-Medonte to a resort?

Yes. An Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. State the passenger and bag counts in the booker so we can match the vehicle.

What does the transfer cost?

The booker shows one fixed, all-inclusive fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, with no meter. The total includes HST, and nothing is added at the end of the trip.
