Muskoka's calendar has a few dates that decide everything: the Victoria Day weekend that opens cottages, the summer long weekends that fill every road, and the Thanksgiving weekend that closes them again. This guide from MuskokaLimousineServices.com lists those dates for 2026 and 2027, explains what they do to the drive from Toronto, and shows how to plan a cottage opening, a closing weekend or a Thanksgiving dinner with a pre-booked car. It is a planning page for people who would rather arrive on time than reinvent the trip each year.
When are the Muskoka long weekends in 2026 and 2027?
Ontario's statutory long weekends are Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day and Thanksgiving. In 2026 Victoria Day is 18 May, Labour Day 7 September and Thanksgiving 12 October. In 2027 they are 24 May, 6 September and 11 October. The Civic Holiday, first Monday in August, is not statutory.
Ontario's list of public holidays under the Employment Standards Act names nine days: New Year's Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The first Monday in August is not on it; the province says some employers choose to give the day, and are not required to. Many cottagers treat it as a long weekend anyway, which is why it behaves like one on the road.
| Holiday | 2026 | 2027 | What it means in Muskoka |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family Day | Mon 16 February | Mon 15 February | winter and ski traffic on Highway 11 |
| Good Friday | Fri 3 April | Fri 26 March | first spring drive for some cottage owners |
| Victoria Day | Mon 18 May | Mon 24 May | cottage opening weekend |
| Canada Day | Wed 1 July | Thu 1 July | midweek holiday that creates bridge weekends |
| Civic Holiday (not statutory) | Mon 3 August | Mon 2 August | peak summer long weekend for many |
| Labour Day | Mon 7 September | Mon 6 September | last summer weekend; first closing for some |
| Thanksgiving | Mon 12 October | Mon 11 October | colour weekend and cottage closing |
The dates are worked out from the usual rules: Victoria Day is the Monday before 25 May, Labour Day the first Monday of September and Thanksgiving the second Monday of October. For official confirmation, check Ontario.ca.
What a long weekend does to Highway 400 and Highway 11
The pattern is simple and repeats. Northbound traffic builds on the Friday afternoon, or the Thursday afternoon when Monday is the holiday; southbound traffic peaks late on the last day, often Monday afternoon and evening. The sections that slow first are the stretch of Highway 400 north of Barrie where it becomes Highway 11, and the approaches to Orillia, Washago and Gravenhurst.
Our baseline for planning is the normal off-peak time from Toronto Pearson. Add an allowance for the holiday peak, and be flexible about the start time.
| From Pearson to | Distance | Off-peak time | Holiday-peak allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gravenhurst | about 167 km | 2 h 15 | 3 h 30 or more on the Friday or last-day afternoon |
| Bracebridge | about 183 km | 2 h 25 | 3 h 45 or more |
| Huntsville | about 218 km | 2 h 50 | 4 h 15 or more |
| Dorset | about 231 km | 3 h 15 | 4 h 30 or more |
The simplest way to beat it is to leave at an unfashionable time. A Thursday evening or an early Friday morning northbound, and a Monday morning or a late Monday night southbound, are both calmer than the middle of the day. Our Highway 400 and 11 cottage traffic guide walks through the hour-by-hour pattern, and 511 Ontario (linked at the end of this page) shows live cameras, closures and roadwork for the drive. For the full route see the Toronto to Muskoka route planner.
Victoria Day: the cottage opening weekend
Victoria Day is when many cottages open for the season. The arrival is heavier than any other trip of the year: bedding, a freezer's worth of food, boat gear and a family of five. Plan the car around the load, not the people:
- A Business SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 6 bags; a Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 and 12.
- Tell the chauffeur if you are picking up groceries on the way, and add the stop in the booker.
- Know the key arrangement. A cottage on a private lane may have a code or an owner who is arriving later.
- Marinas and restaurants may still be on early-season hours, so eat before you arrive if your pickup is late.
Opening weekends are also when a one-way transfer makes sense even for people who own a car: a family that drives up on Friday can have one adult taken back to the city on Monday without a second vehicle. See cottage transfers for the one-way version.
Canada Day, the Civic Holiday and the bridge weekends
Canada Day falls on a Wednesday in 2026 and a Thursday in 2027, so many families take a bridge day or two and stretch it to four. The practical effect is a longer, flatter peak that starts earlier in the week, rather than a single Friday surge. The Civic Holiday on 3 August 2026 and 2 August 2027 is a separate peak, and for many cottage owners it is the busiest weekend of the year because no school or work obligation tugs at the end of it.
On both weekends, summer boat traffic around the marinas of Gravenhurst, Port Carling and Bala adds to the road load. If you have a lunch reservation or a key handover, ask for an earlier pickup than your first instinct suggests.
Labour Day and the closing weekends
For many cottages, the Labour Day weekend is the last full weekend of the season; for others, Thanksgiving is. Closing a cottage means draining the water system, putting the boat away and packing what comes home, so the return trip carries more luggage than the arrival. A Sprinter with 12 bags of capacity is often easier than two cars.
Thanksgiving: colour, dinners and cottage closings
Thanksgiving is the busiest autumn weekend, because it combines peak colour with cottage closings and restaurant dinners. The Discover Muskoka Thanksgiving guide lists what is going on in 2026, from 9 to 12 October:
- Dinners: Thanksgiving menus at resorts including Deerhurst, JW Marriott The Rosseau, Muskoka Bay Resort, Windermere House and Sherwood Inn, with reservations strongly recommended. A turkey dinner in Baysville at Cast Iron ran on a first-come basis on the Sunday.
- Cruises: one-hour colour cruises from Gravenhurst on the Muskoka Steamships, and sunset and dinner cruises on Lake Rosseau.
- Lookouts and parks: the Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower, which required a reservation at ahtrails.ca from 19 September to 25 October, and Algonquin Park, where the Highway 60 corridor day permit is $21.00 per vehicle per day as of 2026, bought online or by phone and not at the gate. Ontario Parks describes the Thanksgiving weekend as especially busy.
- Resort packages: Bayview Wildwood Resort in Severn Bridge offered a three-night all-inclusive Thanksgiving stay, and Port Cunnington Lodge in Dwight listed buffets through the weekend.
- Harvest events: the Muskoka Cranberry Harvest, 26 September to 25 October 2026, and a Rosseau pumpkin festival.
See the Muskoka fall colours tour for routes and timing, the Dorset page for the tower rules, and Baysville and Lake of Bays for the lake villages. The Bayview Wildwood Resort page has the drive from Pearson and the car-seat details.
Planning the return trip
The return is where holiday plans go wrong. A flight at 6 pm from Pearson on the holiday Monday needs you at the airport about three hours early for an international flight and about two for a domestic one. Add the peak-day drive and the margin, and the real departure from a Muskoka cottage can be around noon.
A rule of thumb that works:
- Take the departure time of your flight.
- Subtract the airport buffer: 3 hours for international, 2 for domestic.
- Subtract the holiday-peak drive time from the table above.
- Subtract 30 minutes for loading, a washroom stop and the unexpected.
The answer is your pickup time. Airport arrivals, by contrast, are tracked: if your flight is late, the chauffeur adjusts. You get 60 minutes of free waiting after international landings and 30 after domestic. Other pickups include 15 minutes.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chauffeured car from MuskokaLimousineServices.com | off-peak time plus the peak allowance | fixed fare via booker, quoted before you pay | up to 12 bags in a Sprinter | families, groups, anyone on a fixed schedule |
| Drive yourself | off-peak time plus the peak allowance | fuel plus parking | whatever fits | owners who want their own vehicle at the cottage |
| Ontario Northland coach | per timetable, to Gravenhurst, Bracebridge or Huntsville | fare on ontarionorthland.ca | normal coach limits | single travellers; confirm holiday schedules |

| Local taxi | by the minute | metered | a few bags | short hops, when available |
The Northlander passenger train is planned to return with stops at Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville. As of 10 October 2026 Ontario Northland describes the service as returning later this year and shows no confirmed launch date, so do not plan a holiday trip around it; the Northlander guide tracks the status.
When the bus or train is the better choice, and when it is not
If you travel alone with one bag and your destination is a hotel in Bracebridge or Huntsville, the Ontario Northland coach is a sensible choice, as long as the holiday timetable matches your day. Check the schedule on ontarionorthland.ca before you commit.
A private car wins when you are three or more, when you are carrying cottage supplies, when your flight arrives after the last coach, when a wedding or dinner has a fixed start time, or when children need car seats. The booker offers child, toddler and booster seats. Tell the desk about a pet when you book; pets travel in a carrier and trained service animals travel free.
Booking early, and what peak dates mean for cancellations
Book as soon as your dates are fixed. Vehicles for long weekends fill first in the larger classes, such as the Sprinters, and the Mercedes-Maybach, stretch limousines and party bus are always "availability confirmed at booking", while a Rolls-Royce is on request through the reservations desk.
The standard cancellation terms, counted from the scheduled pickup, are: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%. Peak dates, which include long weekends and large weddings, may carry a different deadline, printed on your confirmation. Read that line when you book.
The fare itself is fixed and all-in; the 13% HST is included and nothing is added at the end of the trip. If your holiday involves several stops, see the hourly chauffeur guide, and for ski weekends the winter and ski transfers page.

Frequently asked questions
When is Thanksgiving in Ontario in 2026 and 2027?
Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October: 12 October 2026 and 11 October 2027. The long weekend runs from the Saturday to the Monday, with many people travelling on the Thursday or Friday before. Muskoka is especially busy because the date coincides with peak colour and cottage closings.
Is there a bus from Muskoka to Toronto?
Yes. Ontario Northland coaches serve towns along Highway 11 including Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville, with Toronto stops. Check the current timetable on ontarionorthland.ca, especially around holidays. The lake villages, such as Baysville and Dorset, are not on a coach route.
How early should I book a car for a long weekend?
As soon as your dates are fixed. Long weekends and large weddings are peak dates, and larger vehicles fill first. Booking early also shows you the cancellation deadline, which can differ on peak dates and is printed on your confirmation.
How bad is Highway 400 on a holiday weekend?
Plan for roughly an hour or more on top of your normal drive time on a Friday afternoon northbound or the last afternoon southbound. A Thursday evening, early-morning or late-night departure is usually calmer. Check 511 Ontario cameras before you leave.
Do I need a reservation for the Dorset Lookout Tower at Thanksgiving?
In 2026, yes. Reservations were required from 19 September to 25 October, booked at ahtrails.ca. Book the tower first, then give us the time so the pickup can be built around it. See the Dorset page.
Can your car carry cottage opening supplies?
Yes, within the vehicle's luggage limit. A Business SUV takes 6 bags, an Executive Sprinter 12. Stretch limousines take minimal luggage and the party bus two large bags. Add a grocery stop as an extra stop in the booker.
What if my flight is delayed on the holiday Monday?
Airport pickups are flight-tracked, so the chauffeur adjusts. After landing, you have 60 minutes of free waiting on international arrivals and 30 on domestic ones. Meet and greet inside arrivals is a booker option.
Is the Northlander train running to Muskoka?
As of 10 October 2026, Ontario Northland describes the Northlander as returning later this year and does not confirm a launch date. Its planned stops include Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville. Check Ontario Northland before relying on it.
