A large share of Muskoka's seasonal population lives about 130 to 215 km south, in the York Region towns north of Toronto. They drive up on Friday and back on Sunday, and for a lot of them the part of the week that costs the most is the road. MuskokaLimousineServices.com runs the muskoka to vaughan, markham, richmond hill and newmarket trips as pre-booked chauffeured transfers: a car at the cottage, the resort or the dock, a driver who knows the Highway 400 corridor, and a fixed fare the online booker shows before you pay.
This page is for the people who use that road week after week, and for the visitors and guests who need to get in or out of it. It covers how far each town really is, which highways matter, when a private car is worth it and when it is not.
How far is it from Muskoka to Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill?
Gravenhurst is about 140 km from Vaughan, 164 km from Markham, 144 km from Richmond Hill and 127 km from Newmarket. Off-peak that is roughly 1 h 20 to 2 h 10 depending on the town. On a summer Friday or a holiday Monday allow an extra hour or more.
Bracebridge and Huntsville are 16 and 50 km further on Highway 11. The distances are rounded from a route-planner check made in October 2026, and the times widen that check for real highway speeds. Treat them as honest planning numbers.

From most of the region Gravenhurst is under two hours off-peak. The difference between a short drive and the worst part of the week is almost entirely the day and the hour, so the table has no summer-weekend column. Use the rule of thumb below instead.
The corridor: what each highway does
Three highways connect York Region to the lakes, and they behave differently.
- Highway 400. The spine. It runs north from Vaughan through King and Bradford to Barrie. Most of the traffic you hear about on a Friday is here.
- Highway 404 and the Highway 407 ETR. For Markham, Richmond Hill and Aurora, the 404 and the 407 are the routes onto Highway 400 or north to Newmarket. Highway 407 ETR is an electronic toll highway: the operator says tolls are billed by transponder, licence plate or camera, with no cash lanes, and fees apply. You never deal with it on a booked transfer, because the booker's fare is all-inclusive.
- Highway 11. At Barrie, Highway 11 splits from Highway 400 and carries the last stretch through Orillia, Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville. It is a regular road with lights in the towns, and long weekends queue there.
Our Highway 400 and 11 traffic guide covers the pinch points in detail. For live road conditions, cameras and construction, Ontario 511 is the official source, and it is worth checking before you leave.
The Friday and Sunday rule of thumb
Leaving York Region after the evening rush on a Friday and leaving Muskoka before lunch on a Sunday are both calmer than the middle of the afternoon. The 3 pm Friday departure and the 4 pm Sunday departure are the two that people regret. If you have to travel then, a driver who is already booked, already waiting, and who is not also trying to unload the car is a considerable advantage.
Muskoka to Vaughan and Markham: every option compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked private car | 1 h 20 – 2 h 45 off-peak depending on town | fixed fare via booker | up to 6 bags in an SUV, 12 in a Sprinter | families, guests, groups, Sunday returns |
| Drive yourself | same road | fuel, parking | your own car | owners who want their car at the cottage |
| Ontario Northland coach | Toronto departure, so add the trip to the terminal | operator fares | what you can carry | solo travellers without a car |
| GO train to Barrie, then local transport | train to Barrie, then onward | public fares | what you can carry | travellers going no further than Barrie |
| Local taxi at the cottage end | short local hops only | metered | one car's boot | getting around Gravenhurst or Bracebridge |
The Ontario Northland coach leaves from the Union Station Bus Terminal in Toronto, so it is not convenient from Markham or Richmond Hill unless you are already going downtown; Ontario Northland publishes the timetable. GO Transit's Barrie line runs north from Union Station through Aurora and Newmarket to Barrie, and gets you to the edge of cottage country but not to a lake. A Northlander passenger train for the corridor has been announced, with no confirmed launch date when this page was written.
When the private car is the better choice
- You drove up and you are not driving home. A cottage weekend that includes a glass of something at the dock is the textbook case. Leave the car where it is and ride home.
- Guests and relatives. A Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV takes up to six passengers and six bags, so a family arriving from the city does not need its own car.
- Children and car seats. Child, toddler and booster seats are options in the booker.
- Opening and closing weekends. Bags, groceries, linens and a week's gear fit in an Executive Sprinter, which takes up to twelve passengers and twelve bags.
- A one-way trip. If you are driving up one day and returning another, a booked transfer saves the second car.
- Sunday evenings. A pre-booked pickup at a stated time removes the usual debate about when to leave.
When something else is the better choice
If you drive up every week and keep a car at the cottage, driving yourself is simple and costs only fuel. If you are going no further than Barrie, the GO train is a reasonable plan. If you want to run to the shops or to a nearby town, a local taxi in Gravenhurst or Bracebridge handles a five-minute hop. We are not a street taxi, with no hail and no meter. The private car earns its place when the trip is long, the party is larger than a couple, the luggage is heavy or the day is busy.
Cottage practicalities a visitor may not know
Muskoka cottage roads are often addressed by a fire number rather than a street name. It is a numbered sign on a post at the road, used as the address by emergency crews, and it is the most reliable thing to give a chauffeur along with the name of the lake. If you are meeting a guest at a cottage they have not visited, send the fire number and the lake in a note with the booking.
On the way up, a stop at a grocery store in Bracebridge or Gravenhurst is part of many cottage weekends. The LCBO is Ontario's provincial liquor retailer, and many cottagers plan their stop around it. If you want a stop on the route, extra stops go on the same booking, and hourly hire is a mode if the stops take a while. There is no drinking in our vehicles (a bottle can still be added in the booker as a sealed gift).
Long weekends and holiday Mondays
The five holiday weekends that matter most are Victoria Day, Canada Day, the Civic Holiday, Labour Day and Thanksgiving. Peak dates may carry a different cancellation deadline, printed on your confirmation, so read it when it arrives. For planning a Thanksgiving or Labour Day weekend, see the Thanksgiving and long weekends guide and the Muskoka hub. Reserve early if your trip falls on one.
Fixed fare and what it includes
The booker shows one total for your exact pickup and drop-off, with the 13% HST included. We do not publish fares on the page, because a Newmarket to Gravenhurst run and a Markham to Huntsville run in a Sprinter are different. The booker shows the exact figure for the one you want.
Vehicle classes for the Highway 400 run
| Vehicle class | Passengers | Bags |

Models are "or similar" and are confirmed at booking. The stretch limousine, stretch SUV limousine and party bus take little luggage; availability, along with Mercedes-Maybach, is confirmed at booking, and Rolls-Royce is on request through the reservations desk, with availability confirmed in writing. Coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request for wedding parties or retreat groups. See the fleet page.
Which part of Muskoka do you need?
Discover Muskoka describes six regions: Gravenhurst, Muskoka Lakes, Bracebridge, Lake of Bays, Huntsville and Georgian Bay. The nearest to York Region is Gravenhurst, followed by Bracebridge and Huntsville. For lakeside addresses, the three big lakes have a page of their own: Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau and Lake Joseph. Cottage arrivals, opening-day hauls and one-way drop-offs are covered on the cottage transfers page, and winter weekends on the winter and ski transfers page.
Airports and further afield
If you are flying in and out, Toronto Pearson is the usual choice for York Region residents, and the Toronto to Muskoka route planner compares every mode. For longer journeys on the same booking system, the routes hub lists them all, including the Niagara Falls trip.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Muskoka to Vaughan?
From Gravenhurst to Vaughan it is about 140 km and 1 h 30 to 1 h 50 off-peak. From Huntsville it is about 190 km and 2 h to 2 h 25. On a summer Friday, a holiday Monday or a Sunday evening, allow at least an extra hour.
Is there a bus from Muskoka to Markham or Richmond Hill?
Not directly. The Ontario Northland coach serves Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville and runs to the Union Station Bus Terminal in downtown Toronto, so reaching York Region needs a second leg. For most passengers with luggage, a pre-booked car is simpler.
Can I book a one-way ride from the cottage to Newmarket?
Yes. One-way, return and multi-stop trips are all options in the booker. A one-way transfer from Gravenhurst, Bracebridge or Huntsville to Newmarket, Aurora or Vaughan is a common request for a Sunday evening or a weekday return, and the pickup time is the one you choose.
Do I pay Highway 407 tolls separately?
No. The 407 ETR charges by transponder, plate or camera and takes no cash, but our booker's fare is a single fixed total. The chauffeur picks the route, so no separate toll bill follows the transfer to you.
How much is a limo from Muskoka to Richmond Hill?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. Taxes and fees are in the total, with 13% HST included. No fares are printed here, since each town and vehicle class has its own total.
Can the chauffeur find a cottage with only a fire number?
Yes, if you give the fire number and the name of the lake. A fire number is the numbered sign on a post at the cottage road, used as the address by emergency crews. Put both in a note with the booking.
What is the best time to leave Muskoka on a Sunday?
Before lunch, or after the evening rush. The mid-afternoon window is when most of the cottage traffic heads south. A booked pickup at a stated time takes the guesswork out of it, and Highway 400 is easier to read with a live conditions check.
Which vehicle fits a cottage family with groceries?
A Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV takes up to six passengers and six bags, with child, toddler and booster seats as options. A party of seven to twelve with cottage gear needs an Executive Sprinter, which takes up to twelve passengers and twelve bags.
