Getting from Toronto to Parry Sound is a 230 km run up Highway 400, and the choice is simpler than most trip-planner lists suggest: there is one daily coach service, one infrequent long-distance train, no scheduled flight, and the car. MuskokaLimousineServices.com books the car, but this page lays out all four honestly, with the times we could confirm from the operators' own timetables.
How do you get from Toronto to Parry Sound?
Drive Highway 401 to Highway 400 and follow it north about 230 km, roughly 2 h 30 to 2 h 50 off-peak. Without a car, Ontario Northland runs a daily coach from Union Station Bus Terminal and Yorkdale, taking about 3 to 4 hours. A pre-booked private car takes the same road door to door on a fixed fare.
Which one suits you depends on four things: how many of you are travelling, how much you carry, what time you need to arrive, and whether the pickup is Pearson, downtown or somewhere else. Pearson to Parry Sound is about the same distance as Union Station to Parry Sound, within a few kilometres, so the airport adds almost nothing to a car journey and a great deal to a coach journey.
The road, stage by stage
The drive has a rhythm worth knowing. From Pearson, the route follows Highway 409 east to Highway 401, then Highway 401 to Highway 400 north. From downtown, it is the Highway 401 or the Gardiner and Highway 427 to Highway 401, then the same northbound 400.
- Toronto to Barrie, about 95 km. The busiest stretch. Highway 400 is wide here and moves well outside the rush hour, then slows through the Bradford and Innisfil section on summer Friday afternoons.
- Barrie to Port Severn, about 62 km. The road narrows to the cottage-country pattern, with fewer exits and a long run through forest and rock cuts. This is where one stalled vehicle backs traffic up for kilometres.
- Port Severn to MacTier, about 42 km. You leave Simcoe County for the District of Muskoka; Georgian Bay and the first rock outcrops of the Canadian Shield appear on both sides.
- MacTier to Parry Sound, about 40 km. The last leg has gentler traffic, and the town's exits are signed from the highway.
The Ontario Northland coach timetable uses the same stop names for the same towns (Barrie, Coldwater, Port Severn, MacTier, Parry Sound), which is a useful check on the geography. Those coach stops are the ones that tell you where the road runs.
Highway 400 north of Barrie also carries Highway 11 traffic merging in from the Orillia side, which Tourism Barrie describes on its directions page. The point for a Parry Sound traveller is that the pinch is a single, predictable place, and a driver who knows the roads leaves earlier or later to avoid it.
Distances and times from the places people start
| Start | To Parry Sound | Typical off-peak time |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | about 230 km | 2 h 30 to 2 h 50 |
| Toronto Union Station | about 233 km | 2 h 40 to 3 h |
| Billy Bishop (YTZ) | about 231 km | 2 h 40 to 3 h |
| Hamilton airport (YHM) | about 300 km | 3 h 15 to 3 h 45 |
| Barrie | about 130 km | 1 h 30 |
| Sudbury | about 170 km | 2 h 15 |
Figures are rounded road distances. A summer Friday afternoon or a long-weekend Sunday can add an hour or more, and a winter snow squall off Georgian Bay can add more than that. Our Highway 400 and 11 cottage traffic guide shows when it is worth leaving early, and our Thanksgiving and long weekends guide covers the peak dates.
The Ontario Northland coach, hour by hour
This is the only mode where we can quote times from a timetable printed this year. The carrier's Toronto, Barrie, Parry Sound and Sudbury schedule, effective August 30, 2026, shows three daily northbound trips and three southbound, with differing stop patterns.
| Direction | Departs | Arrives | In-vehicle time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northbound, all stops | Union Station Bus Terminal 10:00 | Parry Sound 14:23 | 4 h 23 |
| Northbound, express | Yorkdale 13:45 | Parry Sound 16:56 | 3 h 11 |
| Northbound, late | Yorkdale 20:15 | Parry Sound 23:16 | 3 h 01 |
| Southbound, morning | Parry Sound 09:15 | Yorkdale 12:40 | 3 h 25 |
| Southbound, afternoon | Parry Sound 16:10 | Yorkdale 19:15 | 3 h 05 |
| Southbound, evening | Parry Sound 19:16 | Union Station 23:00 | 3 h 44 |
The southbound evening trip is the one that matters if you are catching a flight, because it does not reach Yorkdale until 22:37 and Union Station until 23:00. Anyone flying out of Pearson the next morning needs to add the transfer to the airport and a hotel or a night on a friend's sofa. The coach is also a terminal-to-terminal service. Yorkdale and Union Station are not Pearson, and the Parry Sound stop is not necessarily your cottage or hotel.
Fares are published on the carrier's site; we have not copied them here because they change with the booking date. Read the current timetable PDF for the stop list, and note that times shown there are on the 24-hour clock.
VIA Rail and the Northlander
Two trains are worth mentioning, and neither is a quick answer.
The Canadian. VIA Rail's transcontinental train calls at Parry Sound, but it does so only a few times a week, and VIA's station page for Parry Sound says the stop is a request point with no staff and no baggage assistance and that unaccompanied minors cannot use it. VIA also recommends buying tickets at least 24 hours ahead for this stop. It is a scenic, slow, atmospheric option for a traveller with no deadline. See VIA's Parry Sound station page before building a plan on it.
The Northlander. Ontario Northland's Northlander is due to return in 2026 with stops at Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville among others, but Parry Sound is not on the proposed list, and the service has no confirmed start date on the operator's page. Our Northlander guide explains what it will serve. For a Parry Sound traveller it is useful only if you ride it to Washago or Gravenhurst and continue by road.
Flying: why there is no direct flight
The Parry Sound Area Municipal Airport is a general-aviation field in Seguin Township with a 4,900-foot runway, widened in 2023, and the Township's airport page lists fuel, charter traffic and a cafe, but no scheduled airline service. A scheduled passenger therefore flies into Toronto, or into Sudbury for the northern approach, and finishes by road. If you are coming from the north or west, the Sudbury transfer page is the relevant one.
For private aircraft, Lake Simcoe Regional Airport in Oro-Medonte is a customs-capable field about 130 km from Parry Sound by road; see Lake Simcoe Regional Airport for the details.
Toronto to Parry Sound compared, mode by mode
| Mode | Door-to-door | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car, Pearson or downtown pickup | about 2 h 30 to 3 h | fixed fare via booker | up to 12 bags by class | groups, late flights, families |
| Ontario Northland coach | 3 h to 4 h 25 plus getting to the terminal | published fare, carrier's site | coach hold | one traveller, daytime |
| VIA Rail Canadian | few departures a week | published fare, viarail.ca | VIA rules | slow scenic travel |
| Drive yourself | 2 h 30 to 3 h | fuel and parking | your own car | two people, own car |
| Fly then road | flight plus road | airline fare plus transfer | airline rules | travellers from the north |
The coach is the right answer for one person travelling light on a weekday daytime schedule, and it is a sound answer. Driving yourself is right when you want your own car at the cottage. The private car wins in the cases that are awkward for both: the 10:15 pm Pearson landing after the last northbound coach, a family of five with car seats and a cottage's worth of groceries, a wedding party of eleven, a hotel pickup in the downtown core rather than a trip to Yorkdale, or a guest who simply does not wish to drive 230 km after a long-haul flight.
The return trip: Parry Sound to Toronto and Pearson
Southbound is the mirror image, and it is where the timing matters most. A flight at 14:00 from Pearson means leaving Parry Sound at about 09:30 to leave a margin for Barrie, for the airport approach and for check-in. A Sunday afternoon departure meets the cottage return, and planning to leave earlier or later than the peak often beats the delay.
Return trips and multi-stop journeys are one booking; hourly hire is a booker mode if you need the car for an afternoon in town. Trains are tracked for pickups at the Toronto end, and a flight is tracked on every airport pickup. A free waiting window applies after landing: 30 minutes after a domestic arrival and 60 after an international one.
Which vehicle for the Toronto to Parry Sound run
- Executive Sedan: up to 3 passengers, 2 large bags.
- Mercedes E / S-Class: up to 2 passengers, 2 bags.
- Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV: up to 6 passengers, 6 bags.
- Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter): up to 12 passengers, 12 bags.
- Jet Sprinter Executive: up to 7 passengers, 5 large bags.
All are "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking. Stretch and party vehicles carry much less luggage than the SUVs and Sprinters, so check the bag counts before choosing one. See the fleet page for each class, and long-distance car service for how multi-hour journeys are planned.
Planning tips for the Highway 400 run
- Leave Pearson before 13:00 or after 20:00 on a Friday in summer. Between those hours, northbound traffic is at its heaviest.
- Check 511 before you go. Ontario's 511 service shows cameras, closures, roadwork and rest areas along Highway 400, and the app has a drive mode with audio alerts.
- Know your last address. Rural cottage roads use fire numbers, small blue-and-white signs with a number that emergency services use. Put the fire number in a note with the booking.
- Build in the groceries. A stop in Barrie or Parry Sound is a normal part of a cottage trip; tell the reservations desk and it is a stop on the same booking.
- Winter is different. Georgian Bay can throw off squalls that close lanes of the 400 with little warning, and 511's winter-driving layer shows road conditions and snowplow positions.
For the towns around the destination, see Parry Sound, Rocky Crest Resort and the Muskoka hub. For every other trip from Toronto, the routes hub lists them. The flagship airport page is Toronto Pearson to Muskoka.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Parry Sound from Toronto?
About 230 km by road from Toronto Pearson and about 233 km from Union Station, via Highway 401 and Highway 400 north. That is usually 2 h 30 to 3 h off-peak, depending on where in Toronto you start and on how heavy Highway 400 is that day.
Is there a bus from Toronto to Parry Sound?
Yes, Ontario Northland runs daily. The timetable effective August 30, 2026 shows a coach leaving Union Station Bus Terminal at 10:00 and arriving at 14:23, an express from Yorkdale at 13:45 arriving at 16:56, and a late trip from Yorkdale at 20:15 arriving at 23:16.
Can I take the train from Toronto to Parry Sound?
VIA Rail's Canadian calls at Parry Sound, but only a few times a week, and VIA describes the stop as a request point with no staff. The Northlander does not list Parry Sound. For most travellers the coach or a car is more practical.
How long does it take to drive from Pearson to Parry Sound?
Usually 2 h 30 to 2 h 50 off-peak for about 230 km. On a summer Friday afternoon or a Sunday evening, allow an extra hour or more, particularly between Barrie and Port Severn where the highway narrows.
Is there a Pearson airport shuttle to Parry Sound?
Scheduled public transport does not run direct from Pearson to Parry Sound. A pre-booked car does, door to door, with your flight tracked and a fixed fare shown before you pay. The coach requires a transfer from the airport to Yorkdale or Union Station first.
Does your car service pick up in downtown Toronto?
Yes. Hotels, condo towers and Union Station are all valid pickups, and trains arriving at Union are tracked. Enter the address in the booker, and add a note with the booking for the building entrance or concierge name.
Can the car stop for groceries or the LCBO on the way?
Yes. Extra stops go on the same booking. The LCBO is Ontario's government liquor retailer, and many cottage trips stop at one in Barrie or Parry Sound. There is no drinking in our vehicles (a bottle can still be added in the booker as a sealed gift); the stop is for your own purchases.
Do you offer return trips?
Yes. A return trip, with its own date and time, goes on the same booking as the outbound trip. For a cottage week, set the return pickup to match the cottage's departure time and add the fire number.
What does it cost?
The booker shows a fixed all-inclusive fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, so there is no meter and no surprise. Enter your pickup, drop-off and vehicle and the fare appears.
