Is there a train from Toronto to Muskoka, and when does the Northlander start?
The Northlander is Ontario Northland's returning passenger train from Toronto's Union Station through Muskoka to Timmins and Cochrane. The pages we read on 10 October 2026 still described a return to service "later this year" with proposed times and no firm start date. Check Ontario Northland's Northlander page before you plan around it.
People searching for a train to Muskoka are mostly asking one question: can I get from Toronto to the lakes without driving? The honest answer, at the time of writing, is "not yet, and here is the plan". This guide sets out what Ontario Northland has published, what it has not, and where a private car fits in once the train runs.
MuskokaLimousineServices.com is a car service, so we have an interest. We also have a reason to be straight with you: a train that stops in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville is a good option for some trips, and a poor one for others. Read the comparison and decide.
What has Ontario Northland actually published?
We read the official Northlander page, the launch fares page and the April 2026 trainset testing update. Here is what they say.
- Route: 16 stops from Toronto's Union Station to Timmins, with a rail connection to Cochrane. Listed stops are Toronto (Union Station), Langstaff, Gormley, Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, South River, North Bay, Temagami, Temiskaming Shores, Englehart, Kirkland Lake (Swastika), Matheson, Timmins and Cochrane.
- Frequency: four to seven days a week, based on seasonal travel demand. The page does not list the days.
- Status: the April 10, 2026 update says the first trainset was nearing the end of burn-in testing, that each trainset must run more than 1,600 kilometres under simulated service conditions, and that the Northlander is expected to return "later this year". It names no date.
- Equipment: three new trainsets; the Venture trainset is described as one locomotive and three passenger cars.
- Pets and service animals: policies are under review and expected to be published in 2026.
- Luggage and booking: the Northlander page did not cover luggage rules or booking instructions. General ticketing is on Ontario Northland's ticketing site.
Everything in this guide that depends on the schedule is therefore labelled proposed. Treat the times as a planning aid, not a promise.
Which Muskoka towns get a station, and at what proposed times?
Ontario Northland lists these proposed times for the Muskoka stops. They are labelled "Proposed" on the page.
| Station | Southbound (to Toronto) | Northbound (from Toronto) |
|---|---|---|
| Huntsville | 7:50 | 21:35 |
| Bracebridge | 8:25 | 21:00 |
| Gravenhurst | 8:40 | 20:45 |
| Washago | 9:05 | 20:20 |
| Toronto Union Station | arrives 10:55 | departs 18:30 |
Read that carefully. Southbound, you board in the morning and arrive at Union Station at 10:55, so Gravenhurst to Toronto is about 2 h 15 on the train. Northbound, the train leaves Union Station at 18:30 and reaches Washago at 20:20, Gravenhurst at 20:45, Bracebridge at 21:00 and Huntsville at 21:35. That is a late-evening arrival, in the dark for much of the year, with the lakes still ahead of you.
The page does not give station addresses or platforms for the Muskoka stops, and we will not guess. Ask Ontario Northland, or check its station locator, before you plan the last mile.
What will a ticket cost?
Ontario Northland publishes launch fare examples, one-way, standard, in Canadian dollars. The fares page lists Toronto-Gravenhurst, and it did not list Washago, Bracebridge or Huntsville fares to Toronto when we read it. Prices depend on how far ahead you buy: 96 hours or more, 48 to 96 hours, 12 to 48 hours, or under 12 hours before departure.
| Gravenhurst to Toronto, one-way | 96+ hours | 48-96 hours | 12-48 hours | Under 12 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adult | $52.41 | $58.23 | $64.06 | $66.97 |
| Child | $26.21 | $29.12 | $32.03 | $33.49 |
| Senior (60+) | $44.55 | $49.50 | $54.45 | $56.92 |
| Student | $44.55 | $49.50 | $54.45 | $56.92 |
These are Ontario Northland's launch examples as of 2026, and the page says the ticketing platform will be updated closer to launch. The page does not say whether taxes are included, and it does not define the child age range. It says discounts will be offered to children, seniors over 60, students, military personnel, and medical travellers and their attendants, and the April update mentions round-trip and advance-purchase discounts.
The fare pages we read do not list Toronto to Huntsville or Bracebridge. If you are heading beyond Gravenhurst, wait for the final fares.
Train, bus, car: the honest comparison
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northlander (proposed) | Gravenhurst to Union Station about 2 h 15 station to station, plus getting to and from the stations | Launch example $52.41 to $66.97 one-way adult, Gravenhurst to Toronto, as of 2026 | Rules not yet published | One or two travellers with light bags, daytime, staying near a station |
| Ontario Northland bus | Scheduled; check the timetable | Published by Ontario Northland | Per carrier rules | Travellers who want a ticket today, not a train in the future |
| Private chauffeured car | About 2 h from Toronto off-peak; Pearson to Gravenhurst about 165 km, 1 h 50 | Fixed fare via booker | 2 large bags per sedan, 6 per SUV, 12 per Sprinter | Three or more travellers, cottage luggage, the last mile, late arrivals |
| Own or rental car | About 2 h from Toronto off-peak | Fuel, rental, parking | Whatever fits | Drivers who want the car at the cottage |
The train looks good on paper for a single traveller. A published fare of $52.41 to $66.97 one-way is hard to beat for one person with a backpack. It stops being competitive as soon as you add three more people, a week of groceries, golf clubs or a canoe paddle, or a cottage 25 minutes from the station. The private car wins on all of those.
The train also leaves from Union Station, not from Pearson. If you are flying in, the Northlander does not solve the airport leg; you still need to get from Pearson to Union Station before the 18:30 departure. Our Toronto Pearson page explains the direct car route instead, which skips Toronto entirely.
The last mile: from the station to the door
The Northlander gets you to a town. It does not get you to a dock road, a resort lot or a cottage on a lake. That last mile is where a pre-booked car earns its place, and it needs planning because the northbound arrival times are late.
Here is how it works. You book a pickup at the station, and the booker needs the pickup address, the drop-off address and the time. Our flight tracking applies to flights, and train arrivals are tracked too, so a delayed train does not leave the chauffeur waiting at the wrong time. Free waiting is 15 minutes on other pickups, so put the real arrival time in the booking and add a note if you expect delays.
Typical last-mile destinations:
- From Gravenhurst: the wharf, Gravenhurst town, the lakes around it, and cottages on the roads east and west of the town.
- From Bracebridge: Bracebridge, the Bracebridge Falls district, and Lake Muskoka and Lake of Bays cottages.
- From Huntsville: Huntsville, Hidden Valley, Arrowhead and Lake of Bays.
- From Washago: Washago and Severn, Lake Couchiching and the southern edge of the region.
For longer last-mile legs, such as a cottage on a lake far from the station, see cottage transfers and the Muskoka hub.
Luggage, groceries and the cottage
Cottage trips are heavy. An Executive Sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 large bags; a Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV up to 6 passengers and 6 bags; an Executive Sprinter up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Count the cooler, the groceries and the bedding as bags and choose the class to match.
Who should take the train, and who should not?
Take the train if:
- You are one or two adults, travelling light, in the daytime.
- Your destination is within a short ride of Gravenhurst, Bracebridge or Huntsville stations.
- You value a fixed published fare and do not want to drive.
- You are comfortable with a schedule that runs only some days of the week.
Take a private car if:
- You are three or more, or travelling with children and car seats. Child, toddler and booster seats are booker options; see child seats and family travel.
- You have cottage luggage, groceries or sports gear.
- You are flying into Pearson or Billy Bishop and want a direct transfer.
- Your arrival does not match a train time. A late flight, a dinner reservation or a resort check-in window rarely lines up with 21:00 at a platform.
- You need the car at both ends of a day, with extra stops.
Weekends, long weekends and the schedule
The Northlander is described as running four to seven days a week depending on seasonal demand, so on some weeks there will be days with no train. Summer and fall weekends are likely to be the busiest, and long weekends such as Thanksgiving are when a seat is hardest to find. Our Thanksgiving and long weekends guide explains the highway pattern, which is the other side of the same decision.
Whatever mode you choose, check Ontario 511 for road conditions on the way to and from the station. It shows closures, camera images and forecast driving conditions.
How a combined trip works
Many travellers will combine modes, and that is a sensible use of both. Typical combinations:
- Train north, car for the lakes. Take the evening Northlander to Gravenhurst, book a car to the cottage.
- Car north, train south. Drive or be driven up on a Friday, and take the morning train back on Monday.
- Car to the station. From a cottage to the Bracebridge or Gravenhurst station for the early southbound train.
- Flight and car, no train. For international arrivals, a direct transfer from the airport is simpler. See the Toronto to Muskoka route page and the flying to Muskoka guide.
For the early southbound train, the pickup is early: the proposed Huntsville departure is 7:50 and Gravenhurst 8:40, so you want to be at the station well before either. Tell the desk the train number and the time, put the station name in the note, and the chauffeur works backwards.
What to check before you rely on the train
- Start date. Confirm on Ontario Northland's Northlander page that service has begun.
- Days of operation. Four to seven days a week means you must check your date.
- Final fares. The launch examples may change.
- Luggage and pets. Rules were not published on the pages we read.
- Station details. Ask for addresses and facilities.
- The last mile. Book a car in advance if your arrival is in the evening.
Cancellation for the car leg
Counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice no charge; 72 hours or less 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show 100%. Peak dates may carry a different deadline, printed on the confirmation. If your train date is not yet certain, wait to book the car until you hold the ticket, and check the confirmation for any peak-date deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a train from Toronto to Muskoka?
Ontario Northland's Northlander is due to return, with proposed stops at Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville. On the pages we read it was described as returning later in 2026 with no firm start date. Check Ontario Northland before you plan around it.
How long is the Northlander from Gravenhurst to Toronto?
On the proposed timetable, the southbound train leaves Gravenhurst at 8:40 and arrives at Toronto's Union Station at 10:55, about 2 h 15. These times are labelled proposed.
How much is the Northlander from Gravenhurst to Toronto?
As of 2026, Ontario Northland's launch examples for a one-way adult fare run from $52.41 booked 96 hours or more ahead to $66.97 booked under 12 hours ahead. Final fares may differ.
Does the Northlander go to Pearson airport?
No. It goes to Toronto's Union Station. To reach Pearson you need another connection. A pre-booked car from Muskoka goes directly, about 165 km from Gravenhurst, usually 1 h 50 off-peak.
Can I bring luggage on the Northlander?
The Northlander page we read did not cover luggage rules. Ask Ontario Northland. A private car is easier for cottage luggage: a Business SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 6 bags.
Can I bring a pet on the Northlander?
Policies for the forthcoming service, including service animals, are under review and expected to be published in 2026. In our cars, tell the desk about a pet when you book; pets travel in a carrier, and trained service animals travel free.
How do I get from the station to my cottage?
Book a car. Enter the station as the pickup and the cottage as the drop-off, and put the fire number and the train time in the note. Train arrivals are tracked, so a delay is absorbed.
Is the train a better value than driving?
For one traveller, a published launch fare of $52.41 to $66.97 one-way is hard to beat. For several people with luggage, a fixed-fare car shared between them may be better value. The booker shows the fixed fare before you pay.
