This page is for the traveller who typed "limo Toronto to Gravenhurst" and wants the whole picture before choosing. MuskokaLimousineServices.com books chauffeured cars on this route, and we will say plainly when something else is the better choice. The route is the busiest road in cottage country: Highway 400 north out of the city, Highway 11 past Orillia, and a left turn into Gravenhurst, the first Muskoka town you reach.
How do you get from Toronto to Gravenhurst?
By car it is about 166 to 170 km north on Highway 400 and Highway 11, roughly two hours off-peak and three or more on a summer Friday. Without a car you can take an Ontario Northland or FlixBus coach, the Air Canada Landline coach to Muskoka Airport, or, once running, the Northlander train.
The numbers depend on where in Toronto you start. Road-distance tools put the trip from central Toronto at about 166 to 169 km and a little over two hours, and our booker measured Toronto Pearson to Gravenhurst at 106 miles, which is about 170 km, with a 1 h 46 estimate off-peak. Treat 2 hours as the dependable floor, not the promise.

None of these rows is "best" in general. The best mode is the one that matches your luggage, your arrival time and how many people are travelling.
The drive, stage by stage
From the airport the line is Highway 401 east or a connector to Highway 400, then north. Discover Muskoka's driving directions for Pearson travellers describe the branching that matters: past Barrie, keep left after the Duckworth exit onto Highway 11 north toward Orillia, then exit Highway 169 west for Gravenhurst. Keep right after Duckworth and you stay on Highway 400 north toward Parry Sound, which is the Georgian Bay side and a different trip.
Between Orillia and Gravenhurst the road passes Washago and the Severn River crossing. Severn Bridge, a small community that belongs to the Town of Gravenhurst, sits roughly halfway between Orillia and Gravenhurst. When you see the sign, you have about half of that last leg still to go.
Two more points that visitors from outside Ontario find useful:
- Highway 400 is not a toll road. Highway 407 ETR, the toll road that runs across the northern part of the Greater Toronto Area, is. It has no toll booths; cameras read the plate when there is no transponder, and plate-based trips carry extra fees. The 407 ETR explanation of tolls covers it. Your fare with us is fixed and all-inclusive.
- Ontario's road-conditions service is called 511. Ontario 511 shows incidents, closures, roadwork, cameras and winter road conditions. Check it before a Friday departure.
Timing: when the trip takes longer
A summer weekend is the only time the headline figures go wrong. Cottage traffic heads north on Friday afternoons from the spring opening to the autumn closing, returns on Sunday evenings, and gets worse on long weekends. The patterns, with a few hours of margin around them, are in our Highway 400 and 11 cottage traffic guide.
A workable rule: leave Toronto before about 1 pm or after about 7 pm on a Friday in July or August, and aim to start the return before noon on Sunday. When that is not possible, accept three hours or more and book the right vehicle for sitting in it, not just for the destination.
Where the driver takes you in Gravenhurst
The common destinations from Toronto fall into four groups.
- The Muskoka Wharf and the steamships. Cruises board from the Wharf, with the operator's address given as 185 Cherokee Lane and the Muskoka Discovery Centre at 275 Steamship Bay Road. Our steamships and Discovery Centre page covers arrival timing.
- Resorts. Taboo Muskoka Resort & Golf at 1209 Muskoka Beach Road and Muskoka Bay Resort at 1217 North Muldrew Lake Road are the two main resorts on the Gravenhurst side. Residence Inn Gravenhurst Muskoka Wharf is at 285 Steamship Bay Road. See Taboo Muskoka and Muskoka Bay Resort.
- Cottages. The drop-off is a road address, and for water-access cottages a public dock. See cottage transfers and marina and boat launch transfers.
- Onward to Bracebridge, Port Carling, Bala or Huntsville. Gravenhurst to Bracebridge is about 17 km and 15 minutes, Port Carling about 43 km and 37 minutes. Our Toronto to Bracebridge page covers the next town north.
For the town itself, see the main Gravenhurst page.
The coach options in more detail
The town's transportation page names two intercity services, Ontario Northland and FlixBus, and gives no exact stop. Ask either operator for the Gravenhurst stop at booking, because a stop at the edge of town changes the last-mile problem. If your hotel or cottage is more than a short walk from the stop, add a taxi or a pre-booked car to the cost and the time.
The Air Canada Landline coach is a different animal. The town describes two direct coaches a day between Muskoka Airport and Toronto Pearson, with Wi-Fi and charging, 36 seats, accessible, and free when you book directly with Air Canada using YQA as the start or end point. It makes sense when you are already flying Air Canada and your bags are checked through. It stops at the airport, about 9 km from Gravenhurst, not at the Wharf. Our Muskoka Airport YQA page shows the last leg.
The Northlander train: what is known
Ontario Northland's Northlander page lists Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville as stops. The southbound times it shows as "Proposed" are Huntsville 7:50, Bracebridge 8:25, Gravenhurst 8:40 and Washago 9:05; northbound it lists Washago 20:20, Gravenhurst 20:45, Bracebridge 21:00 and Huntsville 21:35. It says service will run four to seven days a week, depending on seasonal demand, and it describes the train as returning to service "later this year" without a fixed date.
The pattern is plain even before the first departure. It is a morning train to Toronto and an evening train north, built for a day in the city, and the Gravenhurst stop is unstaffed, so you carry your own bags. It will not suit a 1 pm flight from Pearson, a Saturday wedding or a late arrival. Our Northlander guide keeps the status current.
When the bus, the train or the flight is the better choice
Be practical about it.
- One traveller, one bag, no deadline: the coach is the sensible choice.
- Already flying Air Canada into Pearson with a connecting ticket: the Landline coach is free when booked on aircanada.com with Muskoka Airport as the start or end point, and it handles bags.
- A Toronto day trip with a morning meeting: the train, once running, fits.
- Short hop inside Gravenhurst: a local taxi.
When the private car wins
- Three or more travellers. One car, one door, one booking.
- Cottage luggage, groceries and coolers. A Business SUV carries 6 passengers and 6 bags, and an Executive Sprinter carries 12 and 12.
- Children and car seats. Child, toddler and booster seats can be ticked in the booker.
- Late flights, or a last coach that has already gone.
- Resort check-in and wedding schedules, where the clock matters.
- Privacy. You can ask the desk to keep your details private, add a note with the booking, or ask for an NDA.
- Multi-stop and return journeys, which go on the same booking.
Return trips and multi-stop bookings
A round trip is one booking in the booker: add the return leg with its own date and time. If you will stop in Barrie for a meeting or at a grocery store on the way to the cottage, add extra stops. If you want the car at your disposal around Gravenhurst, hire it by the hour.
What the booker shows before you pay
Before you pay, the booker prices your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle as one fixed total, with the 13% HST included. We do not print fares here, so a stale number cannot mislead you. For the rationale, see how private car fares work.
Airport pickups include flight tracking and free waiting of 60 minutes after international landings and 30 minutes after domestic landings, 15 minutes on other pickups. Meet & greet inside arrivals is an option, and an alias name is available on request. See the flagship Toronto Pearson YYZ transfer page for terminal details, the Toronto to Muskoka route planner for the wider comparison, and the routes hub for every corridor.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Gravenhurst from Toronto?
About 166 to 170 km by road, depending on where in Toronto you start. Pearson to Gravenhurst measured about 106 miles in our booker. Typical off-peak drive time is about two hours, and a summer Friday afternoon can run to three hours or more.
How long does it take to drive from Toronto to Gravenhurst?
About two hours off-peak, 1 h 45 from Pearson. On Friday afternoons in summer, Sunday evenings and long-weekend Thursdays, allow 3 h to 3 h 30. Check Ontario 511 before you leave, because a single collision on Highway 11 can reset the estimate.
Is there a bus from Toronto to Gravenhurst?
Yes. The Town of Gravenhurst names Ontario Northland and FlixBus as intercity coach services, and Air Canada Landline runs two direct coaches a day between Pearson and Muskoka Airport. Confirm the stop and the timetable with the operator when you book.
Is there a train from Toronto to Gravenhurst?
The Northlander has a Gravenhurst stop on its proposed schedule, at 8:40 southbound and 20:45 northbound. Ontario Northland describes the train as returning to service, so confirm that it is running before you plan around it.
What is the best way to get from Toronto to Gravenhurst with luggage?
A private car, because the luggage rides with you door to door. A Business SUV takes 6 passengers and 6 bags, an Executive Sprinter 12 and 12. Coaches and trains work for one or two light bags, and the last mile is yours to solve.
Do I pay Highway 407 tolls on a chauffeured trip?
The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for the trip. Highway 400 and Highway 11 are not toll roads. Highway 407 ETR is, and it bills by transponder or by licence plate. The route choice is ours, and the fare you were quoted does not change.
Can I be picked up at a downtown Toronto hotel or Union Station?
Yes. Enter the hotel, Union Station or any Toronto address as the pickup in the booker. The distance and time are similar to the airport figures, and the same fixed-fare logic applies.
What time should I leave Toronto on a Friday?
Before about 1 pm or after about 7 pm is the safest rule in summer. If you must leave between those times, plan for three hours or more, and use Ontario 511 for live conditions. Our traffic guide covers the pattern in detail.
Can the same car take me back to Toronto?
Yes. Add a return trip on the same booking with its own date and time, or book it separately later. If the return is a Sunday evening, plan for slower traffic southbound.
