Port Sydney and Utterson: a car service for the Mary Lake communities

Port Sydney and Utterson sit on Highway 11 between Bracebridge and Huntsville, at the south end of Mary Lake. MuskokaLimousineServices.com sends a pre-booked chauffeured car to any address in either community: about 205 km from Pearson, usually 2 h 20 to 2 h 45 off-peak, with the fixed fare shown before you pay.

These are small places, which is exactly why a booked car is the dependable way to get in and out. Port Sydney was a village of its own until 1971, when it was amalgamated with Huntsville and surrounding townships; today it lies within the Town of Huntsville. Utterson is a short distance to the north-west of it. Neither has the volume of a Bracebridge or Huntsville to support a ride that arrives within minutes, and you do not want to find that out at 5 am before a flight.

So the approach is simple. Choose the exact address, the date and the vehicle in the booker, see one fixed all-in fare, and a licensed, commercially insured chauffeur is there at the agreed time. No hailing, no meter.

Where Port Sydney and Utterson are

Highway 11 is the only line you need on a map. Bracebridge is the next big town south, about 25 km by road, and Huntsville is the next north, about 16 km from Port Sydney. Gravenhurst, the Muskoka Wharf and the airport side are further south again. The numbers are rounded road distances from a route planner, and the times are typical off-peak:

From Port Sydney toRoad distanceTypical drive
Bracebridgeabout 25 km20 – 25 min
Huntsvilleabout 16 km15 – 20 min
Gravenhurstabout 40 km35 – 45 min
Toronto Pearson (YYZ)about 205 km2 h 20 – 2 h 45
Downtown Torontoabout 205 km2 h 20 – 2 h 45

Add an hour or more for a summer Friday or a long-weekend Sunday. The quick overview of Muskoka's towns, with distances from Pearson, is on the Muskoka hub. Neighbouring pages that cover the same corridor are Bracebridge, Huntsville and Gravenhurst.

Mary Lake: what visitors should know before they arrive

Mary Lake is one of the larger lakes inside the Town of Huntsville, with a surface area of about 1,065 hectares, a maximum depth of about 56 m, and a handful of islands. Both ends of the lake connect to the North Muskoka River, and Port Sydney sits at the southern end. Public access is limited, because most of the shoreline is cottage property. Two places are the usual public doors: Port Sydney Beach, a public beach managed by the Town of Huntsville, and Mary Lake Marina, a privately owned family business on the northwest side that offers paid public access to the water.

The dock and waters at the public beach fall under Fisheries and Oceans Canada, not the town, which matters if you are bringing a boat. If you are not sure which public landing you have, ask the Town of Huntsville; its parks and facilities directory is the place to search, and the town hall at 37 Main Street East answers questions during office hours.

The Port Sydney dam and falls on the Muskoka River are popular for swimming and picnics in summer, and visitors warn that the current can run fast after heavy rain. Check conditions and treat the water with respect; this is not a managed swimming pool.

Arriving at a cottage on Mary Lake

Most pickups here end at a cottage, and cottage arrivals have their own checklist. Tell the booker five things:

  1. The fire number. In Muskoka a fire number is the numbered sign at the end of a driveway or private road, which emergency crews use to find a property. Give it to the chauffeur along with the road name.
  2. The road type. Municipal roads are plough-cleared in winter; private roads may not be. Say which you have.
  3. Gate codes and lock boxes. Add them to a note with the booking.
  4. Whether the property is road or water access. For a boat-access cottage the car goes to the marina or launch, and you go on by boat. Mary Lake Marina is one such public landing, but ask the marina about its own rules.
  5. Your luggage and groceries. That decides the vehicle.

Navigation apps sometimes route to the wrong end of a long cottage road. A clear fire number, a landmark and a mobile number on the booking prevent most of that. The cottage transfers page has the longer guide.

The verified public coach and train stops near here are in Bracebridge and Huntsville. The town of Bracebridge's tourism page lists the Ontario Northland and FlixBus stops, and Ontario Northland's own Northlander page lists the planned train stops; neither lists a stop at Port Sydney, so check timetables on ontarionorthland.ca before you assume a bus will leave you at the end of your road.

When is the coach better? When you are travelling alone with light bags and are comfortable with a connection. When does the car win? When you are carrying cottage groceries, bringing children and seats, arriving late, or opening a cottage for the season with bags of linen and tools. Pearson to Port Sydney: the drive in order

From Toronto Pearson the route is Highway 427 or 401 to Highway 400 north, then Highway 400 to its end north of Barrie, then Highway 11 north through Orillia, past Washago, Gravenhurst and Bracebridge, and on to Port Sydney. It is about 205 km. The Bracebridge section is covered on our Toronto to Bracebridge page, and the extension north to Huntsville is on Toronto to Huntsville.

The Highway 400 and 11 pinch points are well known. Ontario's 511 service shows live road conditions and cameras (511on.ca), and our traffic guide explains why Friday northbound and Sunday southbound are slow.

Every airport pickup has flight tracking, free waiting of 60 minutes after international landings and 30 after domestic ones, and an optional meet and greet inside arrivals. The full terminal-by-terminal guide is on the Pearson page.

Supplies, groceries and the LCBO

Cottage openings and weekend arrivals mean stops. Bracebridge and Huntsville are the two towns where people shop for groceries, hardware and the LCBO, which stands for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the provincial retailer for wine and spirits. Because Port Sydney sits between them, a multi-stop booking can collect your supplies on the way in and drop you at the door. Say how long each stop will take, and the chauffeur holds the car for that time.

For a cottage opening with a lot to carry, a Business SUV (up to 6 passengers, 6 bags) or an Executive Sprinter (up to 12 passengers, 12 bags) is the sensible choice. A stretch limousine takes minimal luggage and the Party Bus two large bags. The Mercedes-Maybach carries up to 2 passengers with 2 large bags, and availability is confirmed at booking; a Rolls-Royce is on request through the reservations desk. The fleet page shows every class.

Weddings, family gatherings and lake events

Lake weddings and family reunions put twelve or twenty people on different schedules. The cleanest way to run them is a shuttle loop: one Sprinter doing back-to-back runs between a hotel in Bracebridge or Huntsville and the cottage, with a return pickup timed after the last dance. Our wedding transportation page explains the timing, and the sprinter and group transportation page lists capacity.

If you are staying at a large resort rather than a cottage, Deerhurst Resort is the major Huntsville-side property and has its own page.

Winter, shoulder seasons and quiet weeks

The lake is quiet from November to April. Roads still need to be passable and driveways ploughed; tell the booker if a private lane may not be cleared. For ski-hill and winter runs see winter and ski transfers. In fall, colour weekends and Thanksgiving bring the same traffic pattern as summer, which our Thanksgiving and long weekends guide covers in more detail.

What is included in every booking

The booker's total is fixed and all-inclusive, with the 13% HST included. Child, toddler and booster seats are options; tell the desk about a pet when you book, since pets travel in a carrier; trained service animals travel free. Ask the desk to keep your details private. Corporate accounts are invoiced monthly, and multi-stop and return trips sit on one booking. See how private car fares work for how the total is built.

Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show, 100%. Peak dates may carry a different deadline, printed on your confirmation. The reservations desk is open 24/7, and the FAQ and contact page cover the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is Port Sydney part of Huntsville or Bracebridge?

Port Sydney is in the Town of Huntsville. It was an independent village until it was amalgamated with Huntsville and surrounding townships in 1971. It sits on Highway 11 about 25 km north of Bracebridge and about 16 km south of Huntsville.

How far is Port Sydney from Toronto Pearson?

About 205 km by road, usually 2 h 20 to 2 h 45 off-peak. On a summer Friday afternoon allow 3 h 45 to 4 h 30. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, so a late landing moves the pickup rather than cancelling it.

Is there a bus to Port Sydney?

We have not verified a scheduled coach stop in Port Sydney. Verified coach and train stops are in Bracebridge and Huntsville. Check Ontario Northland's timetable and plan a local connection, or book a car for the whole journey.

Can you pick me up at Mary Lake Marina or Port Sydney Beach?

Yes. Enter the marina or beach as the pickup or drop-off in the booker and add a note about exactly where to meet. Boat-access cottages are reached by car to the landing, then by boat.

Do you serve Utterson?

Yes. Utterson is a few kilometres north-west of Port Sydney and uses the same corridor. Enter the street address or fire number in the booker, and the fare is fixed for that exact address.

How do I give directions to a cottage?

Give the fire number and the road name, plus any gate code. Add a mobile number on the booking, and use a note with the booking for any landmark that helps.

How much is a car to Port Sydney?

The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. The total is all-in, with taxes and fees and the 13% HST included, and nothing is added at the end.

Can you stop for groceries on the way to the cottage?

Yes. Add the stop to the booking, say how long you will need, and the chauffeur waits. Bracebridge and Huntsville are the usual shopping stops on this corridor.

Which vehicle suits a family cottage weekend?

A Business SUV carries up to 6 passengers and 6 bags. For larger groups or heavy luggage, an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags.
