How do you get from Billy Bishop airport to Muskoka?

Walk the pedestrian tunnel or take the 90-second ferry to the mainland, where a pre-booked chauffeur meets you at the foot of Eireann Quay. Gravenhurst is then about 175 km by road, roughly two hours off-peak, and three hours or more on a summer Friday afternoon.

The airport's own ground-transport page describes the mainland pavilion and ferry terminal as the pick-up and drop-off point. It lists a taxi corral to the right of the pavilion at the foot of Eireann Quay, a curb for rideshare with no designated zone, and a courtesy shuttle to Union Station every 15 minutes. A private chauffeur booked in advance removes the guesswork about which curb to stand at.

Reaching your car: tunnel, ferry and Eireann Quay

The terminal is on the island. According to the airport, the pedestrian tunnel takes about six minutes to walk, is accessible and serviced by elevator, and was opened in 2015. The electric ferry crosses in 90 seconds and leaves roughly every 15 minutes. The mainland end is the pavilion at the foot of Eireann Quay, where the airport's shuttle to Union Station also departs.

For a pre-booked pickup, tell the booker which flight you are on, add the Meet and Greet service if you want the chauffeur to find you, and put your mobile number in the note. The booking confirmation tells you where the chauffeur will wait. The tunnel walk alone is about six minutes, so allow extra if you have a checked bag, a stroller or a mobility aid. The tunnel and ferry are both accessible, and trained service animals travel free in our cars.

Why a pre-booked car suits the island airport

Rideshare at Billy Bishop has no designated area, and the airport says the pick-up zone is the curb outside the mainland pavilion and ferry terminal. When a flight lands and a hundred people check the same apps, the curb fills. Taxis queue in the corral on the right, which is orderly, but a taxi to Muskoka is a metered, long-distance ride that you negotiate at the window.

A pre-booked car changes three things:

  1. The pickup is agreed in advance, and the chauffeur has your flight.
  2. The fare is fixed and all-inclusive before you leave home.
  3. The vehicle is chosen to fit your group and luggage, not whatever is next in line.

If you are alone with a carry-on and your plans are loose, the shuttle to Union Station and a coach may be enough. If you are two adults, two children and a week of cottage luggage, they will not be.

The drive from Eireann Quay to Muskoka

From the foot of Eireann Quay, the chauffeur picks between two usual routes depending on traffic. One goes along the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway to Highway 401, then west to Highway 400. The other goes west on the Gardiner and up Highway 427 to Highway 401 or Highway 407, then onto Highway 400 north. Either way the trip then follows Highway 400 to Barrie and Highway 11 beyond.

The cut-over to Muskoka happens after the Duckworth exit north of Barrie. Keep left onto Highway 11 toward Orillia for Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville; keep right on Highway 400 for Georgian Bay and Parry Sound. Discover Muskoka's driving directions describe the same branching for travellers coming from the west of Toronto, and the fork is the same from the airport.

Tolls: Highway 400 and Highway 11 are not toll roads. If a driver uses Highway 407 ETR, the toll road across the north of the Toronto area, it is the driver's cost within your fixed fare. Check road conditions on Ontario 511, which shows incidents, closures, roadwork and cameras.

What happened to the Porter flight to Muskoka

Many travellers ask about a short flight from Billy Bishop to Muskoka Airport. Porter flew a seasonal route in 2019 and again in 2022, with twice-weekly flights, and announced in January 2023 that it was discontinuing the service. Cottage Life covered the announcement. We found no confirmed scheduled return for 2026, so do not plan around one without checking Porter's site. Charter flights still use Muskoka Airport; see our Muskoka Airport YQA page.

Flights, delays and waiting time

Airport pickups include flight tracking, so the chauffeur sees a delay before you do. Free waiting is 30 minutes after domestic landings and 60 minutes after international landings, and 15 minutes on other pickups. At an island airport, the walk to the mainland counts, so the clock starts at landing, not at the curb.

The island airport can be disrupted by weather, and a late flight can mean a late-evening drive on Highway 400. If you land after about 9 pm in summer, the roads are quiet and the drive is usually faster than the daytime figures in the table. If your flight is delayed beyond midnight, the reservations desk is open 24 hours a day.

Luggage, children and vehicle choice

An Executive Sedan carries up to 3 passengers and 2 large bags, a Mercedes E / S-Class up to 2 passengers and 2 bags, and a Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV up to 6 passengers and 6 bags. An Executive Sprinter carries 12 passengers and 12 bags, and a Jet Sprinter Executive 7 passengers and 5 bags. All are "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking.

Child seat, toddler seat and booster seat options are ticked in the booker when you reserve; give the child's weight and height in the booking. See child seats and family travel. Tell the desk about a pet when you book; a pet rides in a carrier, and a trained service animal rides free.

Union Station and downtown hotels as alternative pickups

You do not have to start at the airport. If you are staying downtown for a night first, or arriving by train, Union Station and any hotel address work as a pickup in the booker. The courtesy shuttle runs between the airport and Union Station, and the Northlander is planned to arrive there as well, according to Ontario Northland. If you are meeting the Northlander, confirm its status on Ontario Northland's page, which labels its schedule "Proposed". Our Northlander guide gives the background.

Corporate travellers and privacy

Billy Bishop is a business airport, and many bookings come from companies. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing, hourly hire for a day of meetings, a note with the booking and the desk keeping your details private on request are all available. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are available on request. See executive car service for the full outline.

  1. Open the booker and enter Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport as the pickup.

Is there a direct flight from Billy Bishop to Muskoka?

Porter flew a seasonal route in 2019 and 2022 and discontinued it in 2023. We found no confirmed return for 2026. Check Porter's website before relying on a flight, and note that charters still use Muskoka Airport.

How do I reach the mainland from the island terminal?

By the pedestrian tunnel, about six minutes on foot and accessible by elevator, or by the electric ferry, a 90-second crossing roughly every 15 minutes. Both end at the mainland pavilion at the foot of Eireann Quay.

Does the fixed fare include tolls and fees?

The total in the booker is final and covers everything. HST is included, and nothing is added at the end of the trip. We leave numbers off this page.

Can I add a stop for groceries on the way?

Yes. Add extra stops in the booker, and allow time on the clock. A grocery or LCBO stop in Barrie is common before the last stretch of Highway 11.
