Toronto to Huntsville is the longest everyday run in Muskoka, and the one where choosing the wrong mode costs you the most. The distance is roughly 210 km from downtown Toronto, a bit more from Pearson, and the time swings between a comfortable two and a half hours and a four-hour crawl depending on the day. This page covers the drive, the coach, the planned Northlander train and the chauffeured option from MuskokaLimousineServices.com, with the numbers each one needs.
How far is Toronto to Huntsville, and how long does it take?
About 210 km by road from downtown Toronto and about 215 km from Pearson. Off-peak that is 2 h 30 to 2 h 50 by car. On a summer Friday afternoon, a long-weekend Friday or a Sunday evening return, allow 3 h 30 to 4 h. The bus takes about 3 hours.
Those are rounded route-planner figures, and your exact pickup changes them by a few minutes either way. A cottage on a lake north of town adds a quarter of an hour; a resort on Peninsula Lake adds about ten minutes beyond the Highway 60 turn-off. The booker displays the distance it used so you can compare.
The route, exit by exit
There is only one sensible line from Toronto to Huntsville, and it is two highways long.
- Get on Highway 400 north. From Pearson the usual approach is Highway 427 or 401 to the 400. From downtown it is the Gardiner and Highway 401, or the 407 ETR if you are coming from the east of the city.
- Follow the 400 past Barrie. The 400 carries most of the weekend load. It ends north of Barrie where it becomes Highway 11.
- Continue on Highway 11 through Orillia and Washago. Orillia is the last big town before the lakes, with fuel and a choice of grocery stores.
- Pass Gravenhurst and Bracebridge. Gravenhurst is about 160 km from Toronto and Bracebridge about 175. Both have exits to downtown, the lakes and their own resorts.
- Stay on Highway 11 to Huntsville. Huntsville is about 209 km from Toronto by this chain of legs. Exit for town, for Highway 60 east to Peninsula Lake and Algonquin Park, or for Muskoka Road 3 north to Arrowhead.
If you are driving from the east side of Toronto and see the 407 ETR on your map, remember how it works. The 407 ETR has no toll booths. Cameras photograph the plate, and the owner of the car is billed afterwards, with a transponder as the other way to pay. A chauffeur car picks the road that matches your pickup and the traffic, and our fare does not change if the driver takes the 407 to avoid a crash on the 401.
Timing the drive: what Highway 400 and 11 actually look like
Traffic toward Muskoka follows the working week, and the pattern is very regular. The table is our rule of thumb, not an official forecast.
| Departure from Toronto or Pearson | What to expect | Allow |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday, 9 am to 2 pm | Free-flowing, work zones aside | 2 h 30 – 2 h 50 |
| Friday before noon | Light to moderate | 2 h 40 – 3 h |
| Friday 2 pm to 7 pm, summer | Slow from Barrie to Orillia | 3 h 30 – 4 h |
| Saturday early morning | Light, the pattern reverses | 2 h 30 – 2 h 50 |
| Sunday 3 pm to 8 pm, northbound | Light; southbound is the pain | 2 h 30 – 2 h 50 |
| Holiday Monday, southbound | Heavy from Gravenhurst onward | 3 h 30 – 4 h 15 |
Leaving Toronto at 10 am on a Friday and arriving in Huntsville at lunch is a different trip from leaving at 4 pm and eating dinner on the road. If your flight lands at 3 pm on a summer Friday, the car cannot change the highway, but a chauffeur who tracks the flight and knows the Barrie bottleneck will offer a better start time than your own guess. Our Highway 400 and 11 traffic guide has the long version, and the Thanksgiving and long weekends guide covers the holiday dates.
Before any winter or storm trip, check Ontario 511. The service lists incidents, closures, cameras, road conditions in plain categories from covered to bare, Track My Plow locations and winter driving forecasts in four time windows from 0 to 12 hours. It is the closest thing to an official answer for the phrase "is the road open".

When the bus is the better choice
A single traveller with one bag, a flexible day and no particular arrival time is well served by the coach. Ontario Northland states that a first checked bag is free if it is under 23 kg and no larger than 61 cm by 61 cm by 114 cm, with skis and snowboards exempt from those limits and two more bags at $15 each as of 2026. Seats mostly have power outlets and there is a washroom aboard. FlixBus lists Union Station Bus Terminal on Bay Street as the Toronto stop and the Holiday Inn parking lot at 100 Howland Drive as the Huntsville stop, with a quickest trip of 3 h 05.
When the train will be an option
Ontario Northland's Northlander page says the train is returning later this year, with Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Washago, Gormley, Langstaff and Toronto Union among the proposed stops. The proposed northbound departure is 18:30 from Toronto, reaching Huntsville at 21:35, and the proposed southbound departure is 07:50, reaching Toronto at 10:55. Service is planned for four to seven days a week depending on the season. As of October 2026 there was no confirmed launch date, so book a bus or a car for any trip you cannot afford to rebook. Our Northlander guide will track the launch.
When a private car wins
The car wins when you are three or more people, when you carry cottage luggage and groceries, when kids need seats, when your flight lands after the last coach has left, when the resort expects you at a set hour, when a wedding has a schedule to keep, or when you simply want privacy for a phone call. A Business SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 6 bags; an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 and 12 bags; an Executive Sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 large bags.
Where we pick you up in Toronto
Toronto has more pickup points than any town on the route:
- Pearson Terminals 1 and 3. Flights are tracked. Choose meet and greet and the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board. See the Pearson airport transfers page.
- Billy Bishop (YTZ) on the waterfront. The island airport has its own page: Billy Bishop transfers.
- Union Station and downtown hotels. Train arrivals are tracked too, so a late VIA Rail or Union Pearson connection moves your pickup.
- Home or office addresses. Multi-stop is a booker option, which helps when a family wants to collect a second passenger on the way north.
Free waiting is 60 minutes after international landings, 30 after domestic landings and 15 minutes on other pickups.
Where we drop you in and around Huntsville
The closing stretch matters as much as the highway. Most of our Huntsville trips end at one of five places:
- Downtown Huntsville and Main Street. See the Huntsville town page for pickup points and the festival calendar.
- Deerhurst Resort at 1235 Deerhurst Drive.
- Hidden Valley Resort at 1755 Valley Road, with its directions through Deerhurst Canal Road.
- Arrowhead Provincial Park, north of town.
- A cottage on a lake near Huntsville. Give the fire number (the reflective sign at the end of the drive), the road and the lake. If the cottage is reached by water, tell the booker where the dock or boat launch is.
For the Algonquin side of the trip, continue to the Toronto to Algonquin Park route.
Add stops on the way
The main road runs through towns where a stop earns its place. A group heading to a cottage will often add a grocery stop in Barrie, Orillia or Gravenhurst, or an LCBO stop for wine and spirits, since the provincial liquor retailer is where most Ontario cottage supplies are bought. The booker lets you add extra stops and a return trip on one booking, and hourly hire is another mode if you want the car and chauffeur for a day around Huntsville. See cottage transfers and hourly chauffeur for how those work.
Other routes from the same highway
If Huntsville is not quite your stop, the same corridor reaches Bracebridge at about 175 km, Gravenhurst at about 160 km, and the rest of the routes list. Parry Sound, Georgian Bay's biggest town, takes a different branch, and you can find it on the Parry Sound page. The Muskoka hub has the full set, and the airport transfers hub lists every airport we serve.
Winter, shoulder season and holidays
Between December and March the drive is as much about the weather as the clock. Snow squalls can come off Georgian Bay with little warning on Highway 11, and the Muskoka snowbelt is a real thing that Toronto forecasts do not always show. A chauffeur leaves more room to brake and will tell you honestly when a departure should shift. Winter tires are not mandatory in Ontario, but they are a sensible choice, and ski weekends add to the usual Friday and Sunday traffic once Hidden Valley Highlands opens. Our winter and ski transfers page covers ski bags and schedules.
In the fall, colour weekends and Thanksgiving fill the highway. Plan for the same long allowances you would use in July.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Toronto to Huntsville?
Drive Highway 400 north to Highway 11 and continue to Huntsville, about 210 km. Or take the Ontario Northland coach or FlixBus, both around 3 hours, or book a pre-booked chauffeur car with a fixed fare from MuskokaLimousineServices.com. The Northlander train is planned but not yet running.
How long is the drive from Toronto to Huntsville?
Usually 2 h 30 to 2 h 50 off-peak. Allow 3 h 30 to 4 h on a summer Friday afternoon, a long-weekend Friday or a holiday Monday heading south. Check the Ontario 511 map before leaving, since closures and construction can add time.
Which bus can I take between Toronto and Huntsville?
Yes. Ontario Northland and FlixBus both run it. FlixBus lists a quickest trip of 3 h 05 and tickets from about $37 as of 2026, with a stop at the Holiday Inn parking lot on Howland Drive. Ontario Northland lists a Huntsville bus stop on Main Street West. Verify the stop on your own ticket.
Is there a train from Toronto to Huntsville?
Not yet. Ontario Northland says the Northlander is returning later this year, and its proposed schedule has Toronto to Huntsville in about 3 h 05, with a northbound 18:30 departure. No launch date was confirmed when we checked in October 2026, so treat it as planned.
Can I fly to Huntsville?
There is no commercial airport in Huntsville. Muskoka Airport near Gravenhurst has seen seasonal summer flights in past years, which are airline-scheduled and may or may not run when you travel. We do not list their schedules here. Pearson is the dependable gateway, and a private car continues from there.
Can you pick me up at Pearson and take me to Huntsville?
Yes. Choose Terminal 1 or 3 in the booker, add meet and greet inside arrivals if you want the chauffeur with a name board, and your flight is tracked. The drive is about 215 km and 2 h 20 to 2 h 40 off-peak, with a fixed fare quoted before you pay.
Can I go from Huntsville to Algonquin Park on the same trip?
Yes. Add an extra stop or book hourly hire. Highway 60 east from Huntsville leads to the park's West Gate, and Ontario Parks says the West Gate is about three hours from Toronto. The daily vehicle permit is bought separately, online or by phone, and not at the gate.
Do you charge extra for stops or luggage?
Extra stops and return legs are booker options, and the total shown before payment includes them. The fare is a fixed all-in figure with the 13% HST included. You see it before you pay.
