If you land at Greater Sudbury Airport (YSB) and the rest of the day is in Muskoka, you are looking at a long drive south on one road: Highway 69, which becomes Highway 400 at the south end. MuskokaLimousineServices.com books chauffeured cars on that road from the terminal at Garson to Parry Sound, to the Muskoka lakes, and on to Gravenhurst and Bracebridge, all as one fixed-fare transfer.
This page gives you the distances, the airline picture at YSB, the road's quirks, and an honest view of when a coach or a different flight plan is smarter than a four-hour car ride.
How do you get from Sudbury airport to Muskoka?
Pre-book a chauffeured car from Greater Sudbury Airport. The route is Highway 69 south to Highway 400, then east on Highway 141 and Muskoka roads. Parry Sound is about 187 km, Huntsville about 260 km, Bracebridge about 266 km and Gravenhurst about 270 km, between roughly 2 h 50 and 4 h 10 off-peak. The booker shows one fixed fare first.
That is a long trip, but a simple one. There is one main road, long stretches without a town, and four lanes for much of the way. The variables are weather, wildlife and the amount of cottage traffic where the highway reaches the Muskoka end.
Distances from YSB to each destination
Distances are road distances from a route planner, rounded. Times are clear-weather baselines.
| From YSB to | Road distance | Typical time off-peak | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parry Sound | about 187 km | about 2 h 50 | Highway 69 |
| Huntsville | about 260 km | about 3 h 50 | Highway 69, Highway 141, Highway 11 |
| Bracebridge | about 266 km | about 4 h | Highway 69, Highway 141, Highway 11 |
| Gravenhurst | about 270 km | about 4 h 05 | Highway 69, Highway 400, Highway 141, Muskoka Road 169 |
The highway portion is the same for every row. Past the Highway 400 junction, the quickest road depends on your exact address, and your chauffeur confirms the route on the day. To see every town we serve, use the Muskoka hub.
At Greater Sudbury Airport
The airport lists its address as 5000 Air Terminal Drive in Garson, and the terminal is open seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m., according to the airport's site. The ground transportation entry on the same site lists a taxi service, car rentals, public transit and parking, without further detail, so a transfer to Muskoka is best booked ahead.
The airlines page names the carriers at YSB. Air Canada flies daily to Toronto Pearson with worldwide connections, Porter flies daily to Billy Bishop, Bearskin Airlines flies within northern Ontario and to Winnipeg, and Propair operates charters. See the airlines page for the live list, since schedules and seasonal service change.
That matters for what you do next. Pearson and Billy Bishop are both close to the places Muskoka visitors connect through. If you are changing planes, our Toronto Pearson and Toronto Billy Bishop pages describe the ground options at each.
The Meet and Greet service inside arrivals is a booker add-on: the chauffeur waits with a name board, or an alias, and you walk straight out. Without it, you receive the car details by message and a call when the chauffeur is close. Flight tracking is on every airport pickup, so a delayed aircraft moves the pickup, not the other way round.
Highway 69 south: what the road is like
Leaving Garson you head south through the Sudbury area, then down the long four-lane corridor of Highway 69 towards Parry Sound. It crosses the French River, passes the turnoffs for Pointe au Baril and the smaller communities on Georgian Bay, and meets Highway 400 near the southern end.
The corridor is less crowded than the southern end of the cottage country, but it has its own issues.
- Wildlife. Moose and deer move across Shield country at dawn and dusk. This is the main reason we avoid late-night legs.
- Distance between services. Long stretches have few services. Tell the desk about a planned stop, and fuel up with plenty of margin.
- Winter weather. Snow squalls can reduce visibility. Ontario 511 shows winter road conditions, closures, construction and snowplow positions, and the chauffeur checks it before leaving.
- Construction. Summer work zones cut speeds. Allow extra time for an evening flight arrival.
At the southern end, Highway 69 merges into Highway 400. The Muskoka lakes sit east of that junction, via Highway 141 and Muskoka Road 169, and the Georgian Bay shore is just west.
A sample timeline for a Gravenhurst arrival
Say your flight lands at 13:00 and you have only carry-on. The chauffeur is inside arrivals with a name board, you are in the car by about 13:25, and the planner's four hours and five minutes puts you in Gravenhurst a little after 17:30, with a stop for fuel and food stretching that to about 18:15. In November that is a dusk arrival, so we would not book a landing after 15:00 without accepting a dark last hour on the Muskoka roads. For a landing at 18:00 in winter, the sensible alternative is to stop in Parry Sound for the night and finish in the morning.
Parry Sound, the Muskoka lakes, or Gravenhurst
Each destination has a different last leg.
- Parry Sound is the end of the highway portion. At about 187 km, it is the shortest transfer from YSB and a good option for Georgian Bay visitors. See the Parry Sound page.
- The lakes: Rosseau, Port Carling and Bala. The car leaves the highway for Highway 141 and Muskoka roads. Our Port Carling page covers the heart of Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau and Lake Joseph.
- Huntsville and Bracebridge need Highway 11 after Highway 141, and on summer Fridays the Highway 11 stretch can be busy. See Huntsville and Bracebridge.
- Gravenhurst is the south gateway to Lake Muskoka and the end of this page's longest run. See Gravenhurst.
Sudbury to Muskoka without a car service
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeured car | about 2 h 50 to 4 h 15 | fixed fare via booker | per vehicle class | groups, luggage, late arrivals |
| Fly to Toronto, then ground transfer | most of a day with a connection | airline fare plus fixed-fare ground leg | airline allowance | travellers already on an onward ticket |
| Ontario Northland coach, change at North Bay | a long day | public fare on ontarionorthland.ca | coach allowance | solo, daytime, flexible |
| Rental car | about 4 h plus counter time | rental rate plus fuel | your own boot | experienced northern drivers |
Ontario Northland operates an Ottawa, North Bay and Sudbury coach (routes 501 and 502) and a Toronto, Barrie, Bracebridge, Huntsville and North Bay line, so a Sudbury to Huntsville bus journey means a change at North Bay. The company's website lists current timetables. The Northlander train is not running as of this writing, and the company says it is working toward reinstatement. Our Northlander guide tracks it.
When the plane or coach is better
If you hold a flight ticket to Toronto that you can use, it can be a better choice for a single traveller who then takes a ground transfer from Pearson, because the car leg is about 170 km instead of 270. Read our flying to Muskoka guide for the options. Air Canada and Porter both serve YSB, and the airlines page is the place to compare.
A coach is the better choice for one person with one bag, a weekday daytime arrival and no deadline. We will say so plainly.
When a private car wins this trip
- A late arrival. The last coach has gone, and a long highway at night is not a place to wait.
- Three or more travellers. A Business SUV carries up to 6 passengers with 6 bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to 12 with 12 bags.
- Gear. Hockey bags, skis, fishing equipment and cottage supplies do not fit on a coach seat.
- Children. Child seat, toddler seat and booster seat options are in the booker, and a stop every two hours is easy to add. See family travel.
- Privacy. A private cabin, details kept private if you ask the desk, and NDAs on request.
- Event timing. A fixed pickup keeps a resort check-in or a wedding rehearsal on schedule.
Going the other way: Muskoka to Sudbury airport
The terminal opens at 4 a.m., which suits an early departure. But the drive from the lakes to Garson takes close to four hours, so a 7 a.m. flight means leaving the night before or driving in the dark. Our advice is to choose a flight after 10 a.m., or to stay in Sudbury the night before.
Tell the desk the airline, the departure time and when you want to be at the counter. We work back from there, adding a winter buffer.
Groups, crews and events
Wedding parties, corporate teams and family groups coming south from the Sudbury area can book an Executive Sprinter (up to 12 passengers, 12 bags) or a Jet Sprinter Executive (up to 7 passengers, 5 bags). Larger parties can ask for a coach of 20 to 56 seats. Corporate accounts can be invoiced monthly, and the travel desk builds multi-leg itineraries. Stretch limousines, party buses and the Mercedes-Maybach suit local evenings rather than airport runs, and Rolls-Royce is on request through the reservations desk, with availability confirmed in writing. See the fleet page.
For group-specific advice, the Sprinter and group transportation page is the one to read.
Fare, extras and cancellation
Because the Sudbury run is among the longest we do from an Ontario airport, we show the whole cost up front. The booker returns one all-inclusive total for your exact Garson pickup, Muskoka drop-off and vehicle, with HST included and nothing added at the end of the trip. See our fare guide for what moves the figure.
Cancellation terms, measured from the scheduled pickup:
- Over 72 hours' notice: no charge.
- 72 hours or less: 10%.
- 48 hours or less: 50%.
- 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%.
A peak date may use a different deadline, which will be printed on your confirmation.
More airports in the region are listed on the airport transfers hub, and the neighbouring North Bay airport page covers the route from the east.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Sudbury airport from Parry Sound?
About 187 km by Highway 69, roughly 2 h 50 off-peak by a route planner. It is the shortest transfer on this page. Huntsville is about 260 km, Bracebridge about 266 km and Gravenhurst about 270 km, between roughly 3 h 50 and 4 h 10.
Which airlines fly into Greater Sudbury Airport?
The airport's airlines page lists Air Canada (daily to Toronto Pearson), Porter (daily to Billy Bishop), Bearskin Airlines, Propair charters and seasonal WestJet service. Schedules change, so check the airport's site for the current list before you book a connection.
Is there a bus from Sudbury to Muskoka?
Ontario Northland runs a coach from Sudbury to North Bay and on to Ottawa, and a separate line from North Bay through Huntsville and Bracebridge to Toronto, so a Muskoka trip means a change at North Bay. Check ontarionorthland.ca for current times.
What time does Sudbury airport open?
The airport's site says the terminal is open seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Check the airline for its own check-in cut-off. For a morning departure, leave Muskoka the night before or stay near Sudbury.
Can the chauffeur wait if my flight is late?
Yes. Flight tracking is on every airport pickup, so the chauffeur follows your real landing. Waiting is free for 30 minutes after a domestic landing and 60 after an international one, measured from landing. A pickup that is not an airport arrival includes 15 minutes.
Is Highway 69 safe in winter?
It is the main highway between Sudbury and Toronto and is ploughed, but squalls and wildlife are real risks. Chauffeurs check Ontario 511 before leaving and drive to the conditions. If a storm closes the road, rebooking is better than pushing on.
Can the car carry hockey bags and cottage luggage?
Yes, within the vehicle class. Hockey bags and cottage supplies fit a Business SUV (up to 6 passengers, 6 bags) or an Executive Sprinter (up to 12 passengers, 12 bags); limousines and party buses carry little luggage.
What does the Sudbury transfer cost?
Enter the flight and your Muskoka address, choose a vehicle, and the booker shows the full price of the trip with the 13% HST included. You see it before you pay, and a long Highway 69 drive does not add anything to it afterwards.
