16 Muskoka towns · 20 airports

Cottage, resort and airport cars from Gravenhurst to Dorset and Parry Sound, to Pearson, Billy Bishop, Muskoka Airport and every major airport in Ontario; fly-in arrivals from the rest of Canada met through the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network.

MuskokaLimousineServices.com drives guests to Dorset, the village on the east shore of Lake of Bays where Highway 35 crosses the Narrows. It is a long way from any airport: about 231 km from Toronto Pearson, 58 km from Muskoka Airport, and a three-minute drive from the foot of the Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower. This page covers the road, the tower reservations that catch visitors out in October, and when a private car beats the alternatives.

Do you need a limo to get to Dorset, Ontario?

For the airport run, a cottage arrival or a group, yes, a pre-booked car is the practical way: no scheduled coach reaches Dorset, the village is 39 to 50 km from the nearest Highway 11 towns, and a fixed fare is known before you leave. For a walk across the village you will not need us.

Dorset is a small village with a very large seasonal population. We found no public transit that reaches it, and local taxis are scarce, so arrivals and departures are best arranged ahead. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup and drop-off before you pay.

Dorset in one look: the Narrows, the bridge and the county line

Dorset sits on a narrow channel, locally the Narrows, that joins two parts of Lake of Bays. The humpbacked bridge in the middle of the village dates from 1914, built with an arch so large lake boats could pass beneath it. Highway 35 later got its own bypass bridge in 1957, which is why through traffic skirts the old main street. The Lake of Bays heritage walk, published by the township, covers both bridges and the early story of the village.

Two details are worth knowing before you arrive:

  • The main street is a county line. It follows the old Bobcaygeon Road, a colonization road cut in 1856, and that road divides Haliburton County from the District of Muskoka. The township's heritage guide puts it neatly: you can have a foot in each municipality. The guide notes that the old Sherborne side of the street now belongs to Algonquin Highlands, which runs the tower, while the Ridout and Franklin side belongs to the Township of Lake of Bays.
  • The name came from southwest England. Settlers applied for the post office as Cedar Narrows and then Colebridge, found both taken, and chose Dorset after their home county.

When a taxi, the bus or your own car is the better answer

Take a taxi for a short hop inside Dorset, if one is available; the village is compact. Take the Ontario Northland coach if you travel alone and someone can collect you in Huntsville. Drive yourself if you want to explore the lake roads, Algonquin and the farm stands in your own time over a week.

Book a private car when any of these apply: three or more travellers; luggage for a cottage stay; a flight arriving after the last coach; young children who need a booster, toddler or infant seat; a landing slot, wedding or tour entry that has to be met at a fixed time; or any arrival where you do not want to hunt for a ride after dark.

The Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower: what to book before you go

The tower is the reason many readers search for Dorset in autumn. The facts below come from the Township of Algonquin Highlands, which runs it.

  • Where: 1191 Dorset Scenic Tower Road, off Highway 35 just north of the village.
  • Height: the present steel tower is 30 metres; its observation deck is 142 metres above Lake of Bays.
  • 2026 season: opened on Friday 15 May, with the last day on 25 October.
  • Fall reservations: from 19 September to 25 October, you must reserve a visit at ahtrails.ca. Bookings open at 9 a.m. on 1 September. Outside that window, no reservation is needed.
  • Hours in the fall: weekdays from mid-September 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; weekends and Thanksgiving Monday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; from 14 October, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last entry is one hour before closing.
  • Fees: during fall colour season admission is charged per vehicle. As of 2026 the township lists $16.74 for a car, plus taxes, with walk-ups at $5.58 per person.
  • Dogs: leashed dogs are welcome in the park and on the trail but cannot climb the tower.

We cannot hold a reservation slot for you, because the booking is made in your name on the township's system. Reserve the slot first, then enter that time in the booker and we will set the pickup so you reach the gate with a margin.

If you hire a car by the hour for the day, the hourly chauffeur page explains how the stops work. A ready-made fall route that includes the tower is on the Muskoka fall colours tour page.

The village itself: museum, general store and the lake

Dorset is small enough to cover on foot in a couple of hours. The Lake of Bays heritage guide lists these stops and more:

Dorset Heritage Museum sits at the base of Tower Hill in the original Fire Ranger headquarters, built in 1927. It has a scale replica of the Gilmour Tramway, built in 1893 to haul logs over the height of land between Lake of Bays and Raven Lake. The hiking trail to the tower starts at the museum door, if you prefer to walk up rather than drive.

Robinson's General Store stands on the site where a hotel and trading post stood in the 1860s. The current store grew from a general store built in 1921, and the heritage guide describes it as still family-owned, with tin ceilings and original features inside.

The Lake of Bays Marine Museum shares the dock area with the heritage S.S. Bigwin, at 1090 Main Street. The ship's own site says she is ashore for 2026 and cruise bookings are paused, so plan on the museum rather than a sailing, and call ahead to confirm opening hours.

An LCBO is placed by the heritage guide in a mini-mall built in 1967. LCBO is the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the provincial liquor retailer; check store hours at lcbo.com before a long weekend.

Dorset in fall: the one season that changes everything

October is the busiest month at the tower and on Highway 35. Ontario Parks describes fall colours as traditionally running from mid-September to mid-October, and individual park reports update separately through the season, so colours at Algonquin can be ahead of or behind the lake. The Discover Muskoka site also publishes a fall colour report and a Thanksgiving guide that lists the tower reservation window.

What this means for the road:

  • Thanksgiving weekend is the heaviest. The Thanksgiving and long weekends guide shows how to build the pickup time around it.
  • Weekday visits are quieter. If your schedule is flexible, ask for a Tuesday or Wednesday.
  • Arrive early on weekends. Gates at the tower fill up and slots are time-boxed.

Dorset as a gateway to Algonquin

From Dorset, Highway 35 runs north to Dwight, about 19 km, where it meets Highway 60. Turn east and Oxtongue Lake and the park's West Gate are close, with Oxtongue Lake about 25 km from Dorset. Algonquin requires a day-use permit for anything beyond driving through: as of 2026 the Highway 60 corridor permit is $21.00 per vehicle per day, valid from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Ontario Parks sells it online or by phone only, up to five days ahead. Driving through between Oxtongue Lake and Whitney needs no permit. Buy fuel before the park; the closest stations are in Huntsville or Dwight.

The detail of an Algonquin day by car is on the Algonquin Park tours page.

Arriving at a Dorset cottage

Cottages around Dorset use rural civic addresses, called fire numbers, on reflective signs at the road end. Include the number and the lake name in your booking note. Several roads around the village are gravel or private; where the last stretch is unsuitable for the car, your chauffeur stops at the nearest safe point and helps with bags. For water-access cottages, the landing or marina is the drop-off.

We offer 15 minutes of free waiting on non-airport pickups. Airport arrivals are flight-tracked, with 60 minutes free waiting after international landings and 30 after domestic. Train arrivals are tracked too.

Vehicles and how to book

An Executive Sedan seats up to 3 with 2 large bags. The Business SUV and Executive First Class SUV seat up to 6 with 6 bags and suit a family arriving for a long weekend. An Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Every class is "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking; see the fleet page. Child seats, the Meet and Greet service and a note with the booking are booker options; tell the desk about a pet when you book, since pets travel in a carrier.

The fare is a single fixed total, with the 13% HST included. Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice carries no charge; 72 hours or less 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%. Peak dates such as long weekends may carry a different deadline, printed on your confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Dorset from Toronto Pearson Airport?

About 231 km by road, normally 3 h 05 to 3 h 20 off-peak. A summer Friday afternoon can stretch that to about 4 h 15. The usual route is Highway 400 to Highway 11, then Muskoka Road 117 through Baysville to Highway 35 at Dorset.

Is there a bus to Dorset?

No scheduled coach serves Dorset itself. Ontario Northland runs along the Highway 11 corridor through Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville. From any of those you still need a ride of roughly 40 to 60 km. A pre-booked car covers the whole trip or just the last leg.

Do I need a reservation for the Dorset Lookout Tower?

In 2026 the township requires reservations from 19 September to 25 October, booked at ahtrails.ca. Bookings opened on 1 September. Outside that window you can visit without one. Book your slot first, then give us the time, and we plan the pickup around it.

How much is the Dorset Lookout Tower?

As of 2026, the township's fall colour fee is $16.74 per car plus taxes, with $5.58 per person for walk-ups. Season passes and 10-visit packages are also listed. Confirm current rates at the township's tower page before you go, because fees can change.

Can you take me from Muskoka Airport to Dorset?

Yes. It is about 58 km, roughly an hour by road. We track your flight, and free waiting after landing is 30 minutes on domestic arrivals and 60 on international ones. Details are on the Muskoka Airport page.

Is a taxi available in Dorset?

Local taxi availability is limited at night and on weekends, and none of our fares are metered. A taxi suits a short hop; for an airport or cottage transfer, book ahead so the car and the time are fixed before you travel.

What is the best time to see fall colour near Dorset?

Ontario Parks says colours traditionally show from mid-September to mid-October, varying by year. Check the park colour reports and the township's tower page before you choose a day; weekdays are quieter than Thanksgiving weekend.
