Taboo Resort Muskoka transportation: how do you get there from Toronto?
Drive about 175 km from Pearson: Highway 400 to Highway 11 at Barrie, north to Gravenhurst, then Muskoka Beach Road. It usually takes 2 h to 2 h 20 off-peak and 3 h 30 or more on a summer Friday. MuskokaLimousineServices.com pre-books the car, tracks your flight and quotes one fixed fare first.
Taboo Muskoka Resort & Golf sits on the shore of Lake Muskoka at 1209 Muskoka Beach Road, Gravenhurst, P1P 1R1. People still search for it under its older name, Muskoka Sands, because that is what the property was called from 1959 until the Taboo golf course arrived in 2002. The resort's own history page says guests first came in 1926, when it was the Muskoka Beach Inn and many arrived by horse and buggy from the Gravenhurst railway station.
The logic has not changed since: a train or coach gets you to Gravenhurst, and then you need something for the last 6 km down a lakeside road. We are not a street taxi. A car is booked in advance, a licensed and commercially insured chauffeur is assigned, and the fare is shown in the booker before you pay.
How far is Taboo Muskoka from Pearson, Billy Bishop and Muskoka Airport?
Taboo is about 175 km from Toronto Pearson by road, 175 km from Union Station and about 173 km from Billy Bishop. Off-peak that is 2 h to 2 h 20 depending on the Highway 400 and 427 junctions; on a summer Friday afternoon, allow 3 h 30 to 4 h. Resorts in Muskoka often quote a round "90 minutes from Toronto"; for a scheduled airport pickup plan on the longer figure, because the short one only holds on a quiet night with no construction.
| From Taboo Muskoka to | Road distance | Usual off-peak time |
|---|---|---|
| Gravenhurst town centre and wharf | about 6 km | 10 minutes |
| Muskoka Bay Resort | about 9 km | 15 minutes |
| Muskoka Airport (YQA) | about 13 km | 20 minutes |
| Bracebridge | about 20 km | 25 minutes |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | about 175 km | 2 h – 2 h 20 |
| Toronto Union Station | about 175 km | 2 h 05 – 2 h 25 |
| Toronto Billy Bishop (YTZ) | about 173 km | 2 h 05 – 2 h 25 |
The route leaves Highway 11 at the Gravenhurst exits and follows signs to Muskoka Beach Road. Ontario 511 (511on.ca) shows live cameras, incidents and construction. Our guide to Highway 400 and 11 cottage traffic shows which hours to avoid, and the Toronto to Gravenhurst route page walks through the drive.
Taboo Muskoka: car, coach, train or taxi?
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeured car from Pearson | 2 h – 2 h 20 off-peak; 3 h 30+ summer Friday | Fixed fare via booker | Per vehicle class; golf bags and groceries fine | Couples, families, golf and wedding parties |
| Ontario Northland coach to Gravenhurst, then a car | Coach per published timetable, plus about 10 min by road | Published fares on the Ontario Northland site | Standard coach allowance | Solo travellers with light bags |
| Northlander train to Gravenhurst, then a car | Depends on the final timetable, plus about 10 min by road | Fares published by Ontario Northland once service resumes | Check Ontario Northland rules | A train trip, once service is confirmed |
| Local taxi from Gravenhurst | About 10 min | Metered | Small cars | A short hop from the station or coach stop, if one is free |
Ontario Northland lists Gravenhurst among its coach stops and among the stations of the returning Northlander, which the operator describes as soon returning to service. Treat the train as a plan to confirm, not a certainty. If you are travelling alone with a carry-on, the coach plus a short ride is a reasonable and quieter option. The car wins on the points that matter for a resort stay: golf clubs and a week of luggage, a late flight, children with seats, a wedding party that needs to be at the lakeside on time, or a group of five or six who would otherwise need three cabs.
The Northlander guide explains how a rail arrival at Gravenhurst connects with a car to the lake.
What is on the property, and what that means for your transfer
The resort's amenities page lists a private sandy beach, three outdoor pools including a heated seasonal pool next to the Recreation Centre, canoes and kayaks, clay and hard tennis courts and pickleball, about 8 km of hiking trails and 5 km of bike routes across 1,000 acres, a fitness centre open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and a children's playground. Guided morning hikes and evening bonfires are on the activity list.
Dining centres on the Boathouse Restaurant, which the resort describes as refined Italian cooking in partnership with chef Mark McEwan; reservations go through OpenTable. The Boathouse page says parking is complimentary at main reception and a shuttle runs from hotel reception on request.
None of that changes the main trip, but it explains the luggage. A weekend visitor arrives with a tennis racquet, a couple of towels and a bike helmet; a family arrives with a cooler, floaties and a wagon. Plan the vehicle on bags rather than heads, and see the fleet page for classes.
Rooms and condos: matching capacity to a vehicle
The resort's Stay page lists resort rooms for up to five guests, terrace rooms for up to three, lakeside and lakeview rooms for up to five, accessible king rooms for up to three, and condo rooms for up to six, with a full kitchen, fireplace and screened porch. Only the condos are described as having a full kitchen, which matters if you plan to cook: a grocery stop on the way is worth adding to your booking.
| Party | Suggested vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, two bags | Mercedes E / S-Class or Executive Sedan | Quiet and quick; sedans take 2 to 3 passengers |
| Family of four to six with a week of bags | Business SUV or Executive First Class SUV | Up to six passengers and six bags |
| Wedding party or reunion of seven to twelve | Executive Sprinter | Up to 12 passengers and 12 bags |
| Corporate group of seven in comfort | Jet Sprinter Executive | Up to seven passengers, five bags |
Vehicle models are "or similar" and are confirmed at booking. The Jet Sprinter Executive takes five bags, so a party of seven with full luggage needs an Executive Sprinter or an SUV plus a sedan.
Check-in at four, check-out at ten or eleven
The resort's FAQ gives 4 p.m. for check-in and 10 a.m. for condos and 11 a.m. for hotel rooms, and says early check-in and late check-out are not available on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. A pet policy applies too: pets are not permitted except certified service animals, for which the resort asks for documentation at reservation. Parking is covered by a nightly resort fee.
For transfer planning:
- If you land before noon, you will arrive hours before check-in. Use the time: lunch in Gravenhurst, a walk along the wharf, a grocery stop, then the resort.
- On departure day, condo guests must be out by 10 a.m., so a 10:30 car is the earliest comfortable pickup, and a flight leaving Pearson at 3 p.m. should have you in the car around 10:30 or 11.
- A Sunday departure is the worst time on the highway. Book earlier than you think.
- A service animal travels free with us and does not need a carrier.
Flight tracking covers delays, and the waiting allowance is set out under "What the booking includes" below.
Golf at Taboo: what is open and how we help
Taboo has been known for golf since 2002, when the Ron Garl-designed Taboo course opened and replaced the original nine-hole Sands course that Stanley Thompson designed. The resort's golf page now states that the Taboo Golf Course is currently closed while it is rebuilt from the ground up, with a reimagined layout by OCM. Check with the resort before booking a trip around a round of golf there, and do not plan arrival times around a tee time that does not exist.
If golf is the point of your trip, nearby courses exist, and Muskoka Bay Resort is 9 km away: see the Muskoka Bay Resort page and our golf transportation service. We carry bags in sedans, SUVs and Sprinters; a group of eight golfers with clubs wants a Sprinter, not a stretch car, because stretch limousines have little luggage room.
Weddings at Taboo
The resort's weddings page offers lakeside ceremony settings and says weekend stays carry a two-night minimum, Saturday arrivals are not permitted for wedding bookings, and larger weddings with both ceremony and reception on site require a resort buyout. Those rules shape the transfer plan: guests arrive on Thursday or Friday, not Saturday morning, and the biggest transport day is the Friday-afternoon surge on Highway 11.
We usually propose three pieces: an airport or Union Station shuttle for out-of-town guests, a Sprinter or stretch limousine for the wedding party, and a late-night return for guests staying elsewhere in Gravenhurst. Our Muskoka wedding limo page and the wedding transport planning guide go through the timetable. Long weekends and big weddings may follow their own cancellation deadline, printed on the confirmation.
What to do around Taboo while you are in Gravenhurst
Gravenhurst is a short drive away. The Gravenhurst page covers the town; the wharf, the steamship and the Discovery Centre are on the Muskoka Steamships page; and the nearby hotel at the wharf is on the Residence Inn page. The town of Gravenhurst runs an Opera House that is open year-round according to the town's website. For other lakes, the Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau and Lake Joseph guide helps compare. All resorts are listed on the resorts hub, and the Muskoka hub lists the towns.
What the booking includes
Airport pickups are flight-tracked, and train arrivals are tracked too. The free waiting allowance is an hour after an international landing, half an hour after a domestic one and a quarter of an hour on other pickups. At the booker you can add inside-arrivals meet and greet with a name board (alias on request), child, toddler and booster seats, and a note with the booking. Tell the desk about a pet when you book; pets ride in a carrier, and trained service animals ride free. The fare is one all-in figure with 13% HST included. See how private car fares work and the Pearson airport page for terminals and pickup points.
